y started to play the Piano at the age of 4. He was born into a musical family, with his mother being a trained concert pianist and teacher. He has fond memories of listening to visiting pupils receiving lessons and being put through their paces! At the age of 16, Gary joined the Army as a Musician and trained at the prestigious Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. During that time, he was awarded the highly revered Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal prize for first place in academic study throughout the course. Gary continued his studies and in 1995, he was elected an Associate of the Royal College of Music in performance (Euphonium A.R.C.M.) In 2015 Gary was examined in the art of conducting by the chief examiner of the London College of Music and as a result, was awarded an associateship of the London College of Music (A.L.C.M.) More recently Gary has been delivering Music lessons throughout Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire on behalf of the Music for Schools Foundation, however he has decided to concentrate fully on delivering Piano lessons, as this is where his true passion lies. Gary is also the Director of Music of the New Sherwood Collective Wind Band
Why the Piano? The Piano, or keyboard is a polyphonic instrument, in other words, it is capable of playing all the parts necessary to perform a piece of Music on its own, as opposed to a monophonic instrument such as Clarinet, Saxophone, Cornet and Trombone which can only play one note at a time. This Musical independence means that the instrument lends itself towards a complete Musical performance, without having to depend on other Musicians to complete the Musical picture. These days, with technology being as advanced as it is, the authentic sounds produced on many inexpensive keyboards is quite astonishing and coupled with the correct technique and knowledge of harmonic structure will lead to a very satisfying Musical experience. Many pupils go on to develop their Musical skills and progress through the ABRSM Examinations. Accessibility
Most households have some form of keyboard within the family. The Piano heirloom, handed down from generation to generation or the keyboard that has been purchased more recently. Entry level keyboards are inexpensive with many being available at a fraction of the cost of new on the second hand market. Learning a Musical instrument involves many different disciplines; concentration, hand eye coordination, listening skills, developing the ability to read Music which entails a whole new language, including German and Italian terms which are used worldwide as part of the universal language of Music making. Entertaining others brings joy to the performer and audience alike and it develops confidence. There are subtle references to Maths as well but moreover, its FUN! Many modern day artists such as Alisha Keys, Vanessa Carlton, Jamie Cullum and Elton John are accomplished keyboard players. Often seen as quite a dry subject, however Gary believes that the language of Music, once there is some understanding, is in fact a performance enhancing tool. Sit in any band where reading notation is required and the language flows between performers. Without this knowledge, musicians can be seriously disadvantaged so it’s best to learn from the ground up. I promise you it won’t be dull! GCSE Support
Lessons can be tailored to support GCSE examinations. Solo performance, ensemble performing, composition, musical elements, context and language can be catered for and enhanced alongside school teaching. Lesson construction
By splitting the lesson and developing the ability to learn to play ‘By Ear’ this will encourage a far wider repertoire and will very quickly, the ‘Tune You Can hear’ will become the ‘Tune You Can Play’! Tuition fees
