It's nearly half term and we've been having some unseasonal fun preparing for Christmas! Put the date in your diary and do join us to get into the Christmas spirit. There's something for everyone with some new arrangements of familiar music and the opportunity for you all to sing some traditional favourites

We start rehearsals for Christmas (!) next Wednesday September 10th at 7.30 at Edgeworth House in Arlesey. Here is a sneak preview of our new musical director, Robin Osterley, in action. He is both an experienced singer and musician and has conducted many choirs over a long and varied career.

We had a lovely concert this afternoon. Our 3 Academy teachers and our close colleague Christine all played plus one pupil from each of us. Our friend David, who is a teacher in a different area, also played some stunning Prokofiev. A real mix of ages and levels, variety of repertoire including a duet and a trio. A fun summer afternoon, largely arranged at the last minute.

My last concerto bonanza on June 28th 2025

What a joy to welcome many of my past pupils to share my last concerto bonanza with me. One former pupil who came, played at my first concerto bonanza in the Watford Town Hall 60 years ago.

I’d like to thank and congratulate my 6 talented and enthusiastic students who played stunningly last Saturday, performing a variety of concerto mvts for the first time with an orchestra conducted by the charming Rufus Frowde, and from memory. Their ages ranged from 10-17 and they overwhelmed us with their confidence, assurance and musical insight. I am so proud of them all.

It was wonderful that many people from the past turned up. I counted at least 8 people who’d been in previous bonanzas (including 3 of my former students, all of whom went on to study music at university/conservatoire). Numerous former students, their parents and loyal audience members from as far back as the 1970s and one even earlier.
What an occasion, all the students played superbly and the audience were bowled over.

Would be lovely if lots of former pupils could attend this very special occasion!

To see the world through a photographer's work seems to be a brief glimpse into a world of both stillness and motion at once, with an underlying quiet that the rest of us often miss.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with the incredible artist, Kris Worsley, and his work really is art with its own language that makes complete sense in the most awe-inspiring way.

He will be leading an event on The Piano Boat in collaboration with Music on the Water which will incorporate his award-winning wildlife photography, performances of nature-inspired piano music (because aside from the photography, he's also an outstanding musician), some of his own compositions, poetry and literature.

Lunch, drinks and refreshments included throughout the day.

Kate and I were trying to remember how many Concerto Bonanzas she has actually held, unfortunately we have no record of it. I know she has offered this incredible opportunity to many people to take part, I was in it 8 times and am sure I would never have played with an orchestra if it wasn’t for Kate. So many of her students, from very young to retirement age have taken part, also some of my students and those of other teachers (of several instruments) . A wide variety of children, advanced students, adult amateurs and the occasional professional have played a wide variety of repertoire - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Schumann, Shostakovich, Ravel, Liszt, Tchaikovsky have all featured and the Rowley Miniature Concerto has been featured many times for the younger ones. If you or your child (or even your parent) have taken part, please comment below!
