And just like that, we're into October!
September was a pretty incredible month for Scots Law Talks.
I had the privilege of speaking at the launch of the Centre for Legal Rights, Social Justice and Inclusion in Aberdeen, where I got to talk about why I started Scots Law Talks and my passion for public legal education and legal literacy.
Then, after months of work creating the resources, I finally got to see the project come together. Across two weekends, I delivered four public sentencing sessions in the High Courts in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
I am really proud of that one. It felt like a significant moment for Scots Law Talks and a reminder of just how far things have come.
September was also the start of another academic year at Dundee & Angus College and my first semester teaching at Abertay University, so there hasn't been much spare time!
I did, however, want to say thank you. So many of you have followed Scots Law Talks for a long time now. You come to the events, read the posts, leave reviews, send me ideas and messages, and recommend us to other people. I never take that support for granted. ❤
So, after a very busy September, thank you for continuing to cheer Scots Law Talks on.
I'm hoping October might be a little less eventful. 😂

And that's a wrap! ⚖️

Edinburgh Doors Open Day done, which brings our You Be the Judge sessions to a close after two brilliant weekends in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I was especially chuffed to welcome two of my Abertay University students along to today's session, and I even managed to sneak into the jury box for a photo!

I am absolutely delighted with how these events have gone. A huge thank you to all of our sentencing judges who joined us across the two weekends, asked questions, shared their views and got stuck into this session. ❤️

And, of course, a big thank you to the Scottish Sentencing Council for collaborating with Scots Law Talks and trusting me to develop and deliver these sessions.

And just like that, tomorrow is Doors Open Day in Edinburgh! ⚖️

I am delighted to be delivering You Be the Judge sessions again in collaboration with the Scottish Sentencing Council.

After such a great day in Glasgow last weekend, I am looking forward to seeing how tomorrow's sentencing judges get on!

A little milestone today as I delivered my first lecture at Abertay University!

It was really lovely to meet the students and introduce them to the world of Delict and Evidence. There were some great questions, and it was especially nice to spend time with so many people excited to be starting their own legal journey.

I'm still finding my way around the place, but I did find time for a wee work snap before heading home! 📚⚖️

Although looking at the photo, I really need to remember to clean my camera lens... 😂

A little glimpse of what we got up to in Glasgow on Saturday! ⚖️

If you missed us, there is still another chance to take on the role of sentencing judge this Saturday at the High Court in Edinburgh.

We will be exploring a case involving death by dangerous driving, considering the factors that might affect the sentence before asking you to decide: what sentence would you impose?

Wow, that is me back from Glasgow Doors Open Days. What a day!

Two great sessions in the High Court today, with plenty of laughs, lots of questions and even some of the kids getting involved and sharing their thoughts on sentencing! ⚖️

I didn't manage to get many pictures from the day, but I do have the obligatory early morning train selfie and one from before we got started. 😂

A big thank you to the Scottish Sentencing Council for trusting me with this project. I had such a great time delivering it today and I'm looking forward to doing it all again next Saturday in Edinburgh! 👩‍⚖️

This Saturday, I will be Glasgow bound to celebrate the Doors Open Days Festival!

To mark the occasion, I am delighted to finally share that, in collaboration with the Scottish Sentencing Council, I will be delivering a brand new, free event all about sentencing.

If you fancy taking on the role of a sentencing judge, you will have the chance to consider the case, decide what sentence you would impose and see how your decision compares with others in the room.

⚖️ 11am or 2pm
📍 High Court of Justiciary, Glasgow

Both short sessions are open to the public as part of Doors Open Days.

Looking forward to seeing how our sentencing judges vote on the day! 👩‍⚖️

A really lovely afternoon in Aberdeen today at the launch of the Centre for Legal Rights, Social Justice and Inclusion.

It was a privilege to be invited to speak and share a little about why I started Scots Law Talks, my passion for public legal education and legal literacy, and why I am excited to see how the Centre develops.

It was also great to catch up with some familiar faces, meet new people and have some really interesting conversations.

And what a beautiful setting for it at Aberdeen Town House!

It has been a challenging few weeks since my last post.

Someone very close to me was seriously injured in an accident, and understandably it has been an emotional time.

So I was grateful to take some time out with my wee one this week. Endless chatter about Pokémon and dinosaurs brightened my mood.

I may be a little quieter on social media for a while, and I know there are a few messages and emails sitting waiting for me. Thank you for your patience. ❤️ I will get back to everyone, but replies may take me a little longer than usual just now.

In the meantime, work continues behind the scenes on the semester ahead and on ongoing Scots Law Talks projects.

I have spent the past few weeks settling into my new role, but this week, was the first time I'd had a proper wander around campus.

I had a peek into the rooms where I'll be teaching in September, found my way up to the law library on the top floor, and started to get a real feel for the place.

It's quite strange, really. You spend weeks sat at your laptop planning lectures, tutorials and assessments, then suddenly you're standing in the rooms where it's all going to happen.

I'm really looking forward to meeting the new students in September. For now though, it's back to refining lectures and drinking far too much coffee!
