Appleby Grammar School

Appleby Grammar School Appleby Grammar School is a co-educational secondary Academy School. It has a distinguished history, having originated from a Chantry School.

The first known references to the school date from the 13th century. The grammar school's charter was granted by Queen Elizabeth in 1574.

GCSE RESULTS 2026!!

Our full press release is available following the link below, but we would like to congratulate all of our students who have received their GCSE results today.

We are really proud of our Year 11 students here at Appleby Grammar School. Not only have they achieved academically, they have also shown our school values of kindness and respect and added to our community and we are delighted that so many of them have chosen to stay with us for their Sixth Form studies. We are equally pleased to see our leavers progress onto their next phase of life well-equipped to do so at college, into the world of work or onto apprenticeships.

We are pleased that several core measures have improved as a product of everyone’s dedication. Our Average Attainment 8 Grade, our Average Total Attainment 8 have both increased, as have the number of students achieving 5+ Grades in both Maths and English and as a combined figure.

It is worth mentioning here that we do have some room in our new Year 12 and in some younger year groups, if any external applicants are interesting on being part of our community. Everyone is most welcome to contact us via our admin email address or school phone available on our website.

Today we celebrated our student's fantastic A Level results. The full press release is linked below, but we are proud to say that this is yet another year of improved results for the school.

Students are moving on to a variety of destinations - employment, onto apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships, higher level college courses as well as those heading off to study at undergraduate level across the country. We are especially delighted we have girls studying Physics at The University of Manchester and Naval Engineering at Newcastle University.

Congratulations to Appleby Eden CC under 13’s who won the WCL U13 North League & the U13’s Cumbria County Cup, crowning them the best team in the county.

AGS students Isaac, Lexi, Sam, George, Oliver and Harry all played in the final, beating Cockermouth last Wednesday.

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have just sent an email out via MCAS regarding the hot weather forecast for the rest of the week and the impact on uniform.

Please spread the word that students are permitted to wear school PE kit, should they wish to do so, for the rest of the week.

We encourage the use of sun cream and strongly advise bringing a water bottle to school.

Year 11 student Libby spent several lunchtimes with Mr. Hunter over the winter term creating a 2D image of the Great North Air Ambulance.

The final product is now in situ at Appleby Cricket Club and donations can be made at the bar in the club, which is an official collection point.

Libby is an authorised collector for this charity and her next task is to raise money to purchase an outdoor and secure collection box which could be mounted on the sign.

Absolutely WOW! The first of two evening productions of Annie Jr!!!

Students from Years 7-10 acting and singing their hearts out. We don't want to spoil the show for those of you attending tomorrow night, so there's a few sneak pictures from behind the scenes below.

Doors open at 7pm tomorrow and you can buy a ticket on the door - hope to see you all there!

***POSTPONED***

We are sorry to announce that the planned 'Burgers and Bangers' event scheduled for next Thursday (16 July), has been postponed due to low numbers.

The new date is October 09 - 5.30pm to 9.00pm.

We will be creating a fresh sign up form and will contact everyone who was coming next week directly.

Hopefully this new date will give people more time to get it in their diaries!

Another successful Creative Show and Summer Bistro was held on Thursday 02 July!

Thank you to all our local businesses who donate ingredients: The Westmorland Family, Appleby Creamery and Low Howgill Butchers and also to Kendal College and the The Rotary Club of Appleby for their support.

Mostly thank you to our super students for all their hours of dedication on their art, DT work and care and commitment to serving outstanding food on the night.
