I’m so saddened to hear about the passing of Donald Sutherland yesterday. He was an amazing talent and portrayed so many brilliant roles. One of my favourites was his role as Oddball in “Kelly’s Heroes,” and I will always remember his line, “Oh Man, don’t hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning.”

The joy of spending quality time with friends and family is a cherished gift which we often overlook in our busy lives. Are we truly present when we meet, I wonder how often we are. So next time you meet up really be in the moment and afterwards see how uplifted you feel 🥰

Self doubt and imposter syndrome are two areas of our make up which can seriously hold us back from being our true selves. Not easy to overcome, but each morning when you wake up say to yourself “I believe in me.” Starting the day with a positive mindset can massively enhance your chances of dealing with the challenges of the day and prove to yourself, you are strong, you are brave and you have ever right to believe in yourself 🙂

Wild flowers have a beauty, grace and scent which we rarely have the chance to stop and appreciate. They seem frail on the surface but they have survived and flourished in the wild without the help our garden flowers receive. They have a determination to grow and create a legacy of their species’ characteristics. They have survived; frost, rain, wind, drought and intense sunshine, yet their beauty shines through, their purpose is to be vibrant and attractive for a period of time to continue life. Is this not so far away from our own purpose as we go through life’s journey, we get the knocks, the wounds and the scars, visible and invisible. Our wounds heal but our scars will always remind us of what we have been through. However, drawing on our inner strength and determination means that when we smile, we can smile both on the inside and the outside and our own beauty will be visible to people around us.

I often look to take a different or quirky photo, to try and capture a moment of nature in all her beauty, power and sometimes conflicting energies. This combination of sea, sky, rocks and foliage not only caught my eye but impressed on me how stunningly diverse and beautiful our world can be. It is easy to catch and appreciate this in nature, not so easy in ourselves and people around us. In our busy lives do we look close enough for the diversity in our friends, family, and colleagues? Are we missing an opportunity to get to know someone better and may be help them or listen to them if they want to talk. They might have hidden struggles, anxieties or pressures which we may help them share. Let’s be more curious of nature and people around us 😊

I used to regularly meet a lovely man with his dog last year while walking in the countryside near me, we’d always smile and exchange morning pleasantries. One day we met when I was further down the footpath than normal, he stopped and said, “Am I late or are you early.” It was just his manner and the way he spoke which hit a cord and resonated with me, I perceived him to be a kind, friendly and caring person and he left a very positive and impactful impression on me, some people just have that way about them.

I found out from other walkers recently that he has had a life changing experience and lost someone very dear to him. I can only imagine what he has been going through and what he has yet to experience. I wouldn’t be so presumptuous to say I know what he is going through, we all deal with grief differently and in our own way, but I know he has been on a tough journey already and he’s got a long hard road to tread now.

It is almost a year to the day since Linda left us, I miss her terribly and not day day goes by when she is not in my thoughts. I often wonder how I got through the year, but when I stop and think I realise that the support and love of my family, friends, colleagues and special people who come into our lives is invaluable in helping get through the pain of grief and start to build a future which I couldn’t see a year ago. The journey still has its twists, turns and setbacks to negotiate, but through the support I’ve had I know I can continue my journey.

I hope and pray that this kind man finds his pathway forward and has the support of family and friends to help him.

On returning from a wonderful trip to Spain for a friend’s wedding I was delighted to see these beautiful roses in bloom in my the garden and I remembered that a new friend I made in Spain said “las mejores cosas de la vida son gratis” or in English “the best things in life are free” She is so right 😊 🌹

Often in life we have to walk alone, not through choice, just through circumstance. It is very challenging, especially when loss of love or a loved one is the cause. However, if we can stay strong, true to our values and have support from family and friends, our purpose and drive can survive and it will return stronger, we can love again. Love knows no boundaries, it has no judgment of age or physical appearance. Do not let people’s perception of you define you or pigeon hole you, be true to yourself and be proud of who you are and what you have achieved. If someone truly loves you it is the person they love, not the external wrapping.

We use the phrase 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet' (from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet) nowadays to indicate that things are what they are, no matter what name you give them. This rose, which I took a photo of near Selden Barn in Patching, is structurally perfect, but seems to have colour imperfections and made me think that life can hit us hard at times, however, beauty will always shine through no matter what. We need to live our lives to the full and be proud of how far we have come and live comfortably with the scars we’ve picked up along the way.
