#throwbackthursday to Year 2 Prize Giving at the end of the summer term. Mrs Wilton, Head of Pre-Prep, took the opportunity of the annual Ballet Show (a highlight in the annual Pre-Prep calendar!) to celebrate the achievements of the oldest pupils in Pre-Prep, now embarking on life in the Prep. It’s going to be wonderful to see how these children develop in the years to come.

Look what was installed at Farleigh today? A fabulous jungle swing from @sawscapesplay is now in situ beside Fortress Farleigh, thanks to the 2021 Year 8 leavers’ parents. Thank you all so very much! Imagine what it will be like when the children return next week? Teeming with small people! Let’s face it, this swing is going to be popular!

Also pictured are the resurfaced and repainted tennis and netball courts. Tomorrow, they will be in use again for pre-season training. Roll on the start of term.

Part 4 of the Year 8 Art Scholars’ Exhibition features the work of the spirited and irrepressible Wilfrid, who has not only gained a Basil Hume Scholarship for Art, but also an Academic Scholarship and the Headmaster’s All Rounder Award to Ampleforth; talented chap!

Wilfrid has wonderfully unusual, highly inventive and original ideas. He relishes thinking out of the box and his sketchbook is full of explosions of thought, sketches and ideas which reflect his enquiring, questioning mind.

His fascination with physics and astronomy inspired Wilfrid to go big on his ‘Home’ canvas to which this online exhibition cannot do justice. The first layers of his painting were to be applied vigorously with a mop! He worked phenomenally hard at his technical skills of building layers of paint, stamping humour and non-conformism in inverting the astronaut and encouraging the viewer to choose which way up they prefer this two-directional piece.

And finally, Wilfrid’s lively and dynamic drawings of birds exhibit a high degree of accuracy, as do his sketches of skulls and deceased insects.

As England takes charge of the 3rd Test vs India at Headingley, we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate the cricket of 2017 leavers, Harry and Seb, opening bowlers for Downside’s 1st XI. Here, in a match vs Warminster last term, they took two wickets each, contributing to their side’s victory. 👏

Our online Year 8 Art Scholars’ Art Exhibition continues with keen drummer, super smiler and long-standing boarder, Sam B, who has been awarded the Richard Hunter All-Rounder Scholarship (for Art, Drama & Music) to Bryanston School.

Mrs Maw, Head of Art, admires Sam’s highly inventive and original ideas. For example, drawn to the work of Colin Taylor, Sam used different thicknesses of masking tape as a resist to build up defined areas of colour, effectively using this concept in his Peter Jones escalator piece. Sam also has great graphical ability and a passion for printing. His Daft Punk Lino prints display strength of pattern and design, along with confident planning of overlaying translucent and opaque colour.

Keep going, Sam, with your inventiveness, originality and creativity - in your art, drama and, of course, drumming!

Anyone for tennis? So many children are playing this great sport at Farleigh over the holidays. Last week, we had lessons with Linda and George, and today kicked off with tennis for almost 50 children at the @kidsontrack three day summer camp - the latter being the very first people to play on our resurfaced hard tennis courts.🤢👍Happy days ahead with the fantastic volunteer team, who give so much with their boundless energy and enthusiasm. Thank you @kidsontrack

There is a lot going on at school in the summer holidays and everyone loves seeing how the site evolves and is enhanced. These rather cool log cabins will be visiting teams’ changing rooms, as well as space for activities (like shelter from the rain, perhaps 😂). The Year 8 hub in the Red Rice building is coming along nicely with the development of three new classrooms on the ground floor. The wall between the Reception classes has been taken down and will be replaced with doors, enabling further collaboration between the classes. And then there’s painting and decorating and window cleaning all over the place; an enormous task! Thank you, all, for your efforts. We know it will be appreciated by parents, pupils and staff alike.

Many congratulations, Miss Hopkins, now, finally, Mrs McDevitt! So lovely to see our Head of Year 7 surrounded by her many Farleigh friends and colleagues at her wonderful wedding at Cheltenham College yesterday. We wish you both every happiness in your life together. ❤️

We miss the pupils during the (relatively!) quiet summer holidays, so it is brilliant to hear the familiar happy chatter and laughter from children taking part in the various summer holiday #farleighfun courses. This week, 60 children from Reception to Year 8 took part in a football course run by Mr Wright and team. It was lots of fun and footballing skills were honed. No doubt many of them will be very excited about the start of the Premier League season today. Good luck @brentfordfc

Part 2 of the Year 8 Art Scholars’ Exhibition and we feature here the work of another outstandingly talented and hard working boy, Myles A, who has gained an Art Scholarship to Bryanston School.

Myles’s work is wonderfully fresh, lively and dynamic and his drawings exhibit a high degree of accuracy. These mountain biking paintings are large canvases; Myles wanted to express the vastness of the landscape and the hot, dusty, red and orange tones of Zion National Park, Utah. He is an innately instinctive colourist painter, able to intuitively mix and balance muted and vibrant tones. He also relishes experimenting with different media and trying out new techniques and ideas.

Good luck Myles. Keep up the great work!

We’re taking the opportunity of the summer holidays to celebrate the achievements of some of our past pupils, starting with four talented U16 rugby players. Otto Bartlett, Harry Godson, Charlie Westmacott and Max Godson, all members of the famed group of 2018 leavers who were unbeaten in five seasons at Farleigh, are continuing to develop their rugby together with the Bath Rugby Academy. Bath Rugby identifies and develops “potential elite rugby players” and these boys follow in the footsteps at Bath of several other past Farleigh pupils, including Rory Jennings (2009 leaver), Tom Vaughan-Edwards (2007), Fergus Hamilton (2011) and Xandi Dembinski (2012).

The Year 8 Art Scholars’ Exhibition is here! We begin by celebrating the work of Barney B, whose talent, hard work, focus and gritty determination have been rewarded with an Art Scholarship to Radley.

The pieces selected here reflect Barney’s interest in African inspired art with effective use of mixed media; his exceptional level of 3D awareness in his rally car sculpture; his technical painting skills displayed in his Venice piece; and his inventive sketches and prints of cityscapes. There is lots more to come and we look forward to seeing where Barney’s determination, flair and originality take him.

Cherished memories of a final evening, four weeks ago today, with this year’s Year 8, who are off to pastures new.

Drinks on the Headmaster’s Lawn (and on the ‘Pringle’ stage when the heavens opened!) was followed by a Black Tie Dinner with their teachers and other members of staff under the tree at the front of the school. This is always such a special, final evening together, albeit tinged with a bit of sadness in the knowledge that life moves on and their Farleigh days will become memories. They have formed great friendships and strong bonds, and we look forward to their return as Farleigh alumni!

Thank you, Jo and Emily @thedresscodeuk_ for kitting out many of our boys. They brushed up well!

Cricket season and we are normally worrying about rain stopping play. Not this week; quite the reverse! Cricket camp at Farleigh was attended by lots of boys and girls and Mr Gough and his coaching team were really pleased with how hard the children worked and how well they coped in the exceptionally high temperatures. Might one of these young people be seen in @thehundred one day?

Something completely different at Farleigh School today, and very rare too. The support team staff had a team building day and we certainly needed to be a considerate team in the blazing sunshine and unbelievable heat! An entertaining quiz, rounders match, tennis, golf and croquet, plus a fantastic barbecue lunch provided by Aaron and Shaun, made for a really fun event that achieved the objective. Everyone joined in and enjoyed each other’s company.

This is not something we can ever normally do, so we are very grateful to Mr Lane and Mrs Penny for getting us all together and organising a fun day that was appreciated by all. Very interesting, also, to see some impressive sports players among our number!

Football mania continues… These girls on the football course at Farleigh this, mostly sunny, week had a blast! They loved it and learnt a lot, especially playing in the quite competitive matches!

With thanks to Mr Wright and Mr Watson for the coaching and reffing!

Hot summer sunshine is on its way again. It brings to mind the last time we had a truly sunny spell and were able to enjoy the fabulous open air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Some in the audience positively relished a dousing from the water pistol-brandishing cast!

We were so fortunate, also, to be able to invite parents in to watch a second run of the show in the final week of term. Well done to our two very talented Year 6 casts, Mr Hession and his merry band of helpers! Enjoy the sunshine. 😎

An intrepid group of 24 children from Years 6 and 7 returned last night from an idyllic Summer holiday trip to the River Dart.

In true ‘Swallows and Amazons’ style, the children enjoyed a wide range of activities on their three day trip, including caving, canoeing, archery, raft building and archery.

Huge thanks to Mr Wright, Mr Brady, Mr Ottley, Mrs Crowhurst Jones, Miss Dunn and Miss Potter for running such a wonderful trip, full of fantastic memories!

It was just magical for Pre-Prep to be able to come together (whilst strictly following all social distancing and safety guidance) to for the Pre-Prep Ballet Show on Friday afternoon.

An enthusiastic display of dancing from all year groups from Kindergarten to Year 2, an upbeat soundtrack, costumes in rainbow colours and beautiful sunshine came together for an uplifting and joyful afternoon. Huge thanks to Miss Louise for coordinating such a wonderful show!
