This resonates so closely with what I believe, I just had to share. Child lead learning is all about connection - the ‘knowing’ of the child and understanding their development and journey. And results in a child who feels seen, who has confidence in themselves and who drives their own learning
Children learn best when learning feels like play.
And honestly? I’ve seen this time and time again.
If you’ve ever wondered why I don’t constantly pull children away from their play to come and “do an activity” with me… keep reading.
Because when your environment is thoughtfully resourced with high-quality, familiar, open-ended materials, children’s learning across all areas can begin to unfold far more naturally, meaningfully, and deeply.
As an educator, I never want children to feel that their real learning is happening somewhere else…
at a table, in an adult-led task, or only when I call them over.
Because so often, when we interrupt rich child-led play to ask a child to “come and work,” we unintentionally send the message that what they were doing wasn’t important.
But it was important.
It was problem-solving.
It was storytelling.
It was communication.
It was critical thinking.
It was collaboration.
It was deep engagement.
And often, it holds far more meaning for the child than a disconnected task ever could.
So instead, throughout the week, I go to them.
I join them in their play.
I observe closely.
I listen deeply.
I notice what motivates them, what fascinates them, what lights them up.
I tune into what they already know, what they are trying to figure out, and where they may need gentle support to move forward.
And that is where the magic happens.
Because this kind of genuine connection gives us a far richer understanding of the whole child than a conveyor-belt approach to learning ever can.
It allows us to scaffold in ways that feel responsive, relevant, and relational.
And when children feel seen, understood, and deeply engaged in what they are doing…
their learning doesn’t just happen better.
It happens deeper.
