Ancient Cultures Group
Recently the Ancient Cultures group enjoyed its final talks on Ancient Mythology. We heard how the Maori reached New Zealand in canoes from Eastern Polynesia (Hawaii and Fiji) bringing their gods and creation story with them. We all know the story of how the ravens in the Tower of London protect the Kingdom, but who knew that Ravens featured in the mythology of peoples around the world? Our second presenter told us these fascinating stories.

Chiltern U3A - Archaeology Group
At last Friday's meeting the Archaeology Group was looking at ancient cultures. Our first talk was of local interest - the Bierton Beaker Burial; and the ancestors of the Bierton Bell Beaker people - the Yamnaya who migrated from the Russian Steppe around 4,500 BC. The second presentation took us further back in time to The Natufians: living in the Levant area around 15,000 years ago, they were the first to bake bread, brew beer and cultivate cereal crops.

On Wednesday 20th October we will welcome Tim Alan at 14.30 who will share his talk Around America twice by Greyhound Bus, half a century apart.
This will be a fascinating story supported by great photos.
This talk is available to all Cu3a members as part of their membership subscription.
If you are not a member and are interested in getting to know us you are welcome to get in touch with me and join this talk for free to experience Cu3a (my email is [email protected]).

The Talk
Around America by Greyhound Bus, half a century apart
In 1969, as a 22-year-old student, Tim Albert travelled 12,000 miles around America on Greyhound Buses, returning with a detailed diary, several boxes of slides and a great love for the country. Half a century later, as a 72-year-old retired journalist, he went back on the buses – and this time came back with a draft for a book, a mobile phone stuffed with images, and some mixed feelings about the way America seems to be heading. In this illustrated talk he will describe his two trips of a lifetime – and consider some of the changes in himself and the USA. This often leads to some lively discussion
Our Speaker
Tim Albert worked for local and national newspapers and medical magazines before running courses on writing ACskills for health professionals. He is the author of four books on medical writing, a memoir and a travel book. He lives in Surrey with an American wife and a needy garden.

Chiltern u3a - Archeology Group
At our recent meeting the Archaeology group was treated to the memories of a member's trip to Leptis Magna, an ancient city on the coast of Libya. Our member found his 35mm slides in the attic and managed to digitise them, with the help of another Cu3a member, so that he could show them to the group at our Zoom meeting last week. There is so much talent in our u3a and such a willingness to share and help each other to the enjoyment of all!
