It’s so important that we encourage children to use practical and concrete equipment when learning. Physical representations help build confidence and mathematical connections with the pictorial and abstract form of number. When learning a times table or practising skip counting in multiples, I always grab my numicon to support a child’s understanding of counting in ‘groups of’. If you can’t get your hands on a numicon set, you can try these quick practical ideas to represent number:

💡use an empty egg box and fill it with ‘groups of’ whatever number you’re counting in. I used milk bottle lids but you could use, pebbles, play dough, shells, cereal, buttons etc.

💡muffin tray tins do the same job filled with loose parts

💡bundles of straws, pencil or pens to represent the groups

Have you used anything else to represent your ‘groups’ when counting in multiples? Let me know!

M I N D S E T
I’m privileged to work with so many fantastic children who really want to grow their knowledge and skills, but I see so many children who also fear the discomfort that comes with stretching themselves. It’s common for both adults and children alike to feel nervous around new challenges and pushing ourselves into the unknown. Like many things, practise and exposure to these challenges on a regular basis can help us view them in a less threatening way. However, to even begin exposing ourselves to things we find difficult, we need to understand what it is we are fearful of and why.

During tutoring sessions, I use lots of different tools to help beak down some of those learning barriers. So we talk... a lot! We use visual emotion ladders to point out how we feel when a particular question type comes up for us. We discuss how we are feeling throughout the session and how we behave when things become overwhelming. I also talk lots to my students about their ‘stretch zones’ and ‘challenge zones’. This gives my students a communication channel and a way for them to describe how the learning feels. Super helpful for me as their tutor, but also very beneficial for any child trying to understand why they suddenly feel overwhelmed. I’ll talk more on ‘stretch zones’ another day.

Some great resources I’ve used within sessions are from:

worth a look for both parents and educators. There’s a whole host of growth mindset resources and many you can subscribe to for free.

offer some fantastic ideas and techniques for teaching mindfulness. I love that their mission is not only about instilling self compassion in the early years, but also teaching us adults to treat ourselves with compassion. I’ve used a lot of their breathing techniques in my sessions too.

❄️ Winter Themed Sensory Play ❄️

I had such a lovely time sharing books and sensory activities at Jelly Beans playgroup in Morpeth last week. It was great to combine some messy play with some beautiful winter themed books for the children.

Blue dried rice and plenty of pots, pans and scooping utensils kept everyone engaged. I added in these two gorgeous winter themed books by Usborne and was onto a winner.

Some reasons why sensory play is important for children below⬇️

❄️ open-ended play encourages problem solving, critical thinking skills and sparks children’s imagination.

❄️ speech and language is encouraged by commenting on what your child is doing ‘tip’, ‘mix’, ‘pour’ etc.

❄️ social interactions are encouraged as children play alongside each other or together.

❄️Children are manipulating new materials which supports a child’s cognitive growth.

❄️Fine and gross motor skills from all of the sprinkling, pouring, tipping and scooping!

I’m hoping to be back at Jelly Beans in Morpeth with more gorgeous children’s books to browse and some sensory play next week!

For all the train loving children out there! This book is for you ❤️🚂

The ‘Pull- Back Busy Train Book’ is so much fun for little readers. Full of bright illustrations, an embedded train track for your train to glide along and lost of new language to discuss.

Reasons I love it:

🚂 The interactive nature of the book keeps even your littlest one fully engaged.

🚂 Pull- back toys are brilliant for encouraging speaking and listening as you can say ‘ready, set.... go! Your child then sets the train off when you shout ‘go’.

🚂 Lots of prepositions used throughout to support understanding ‘under the bridge’, ‘next to the houses’, ‘over the..’

🚂 Promotes a love of reading and gets everyone excited to go on the train adventure.

Something special and a bit different for a birthday gift, or just to enjoy with your family.

For more pull-back books my Usborne website has a great range. From planes to tractors! Have a look and let me know how I can help.

I’ve had lots of interest in recommended books to support baby and toddler’s speech. I’ve become a bit of speech and language enthusiast since working with the lovely you see. She coached me with lots of techniques to support my little boy and helped me get him talking! I learned so much from her and loved all the activities. I have to mention though, it was a combined partnership between parents, child and speech therapist. As parents we had to put the work in to help our child progress as well as take advice from a professional. It’s a good thing I love books and learning!

Anyway, I’ve always adored reading to my children and have lots of books that I would read to Luke, but once I knew what to focus on to help his speech, I was able to plan lots of follow up activities inspired by our reading books.

So here goes..my first recommendation would be the ‘That’s not my...’ collection.

Reasons I love these books:

🌈 They use repetitive language to help your child internalise and familiarise themselves with the words. Any book that includes repetition is always going to support a child with their understanding but also will hopefully give them the confidence to imitate what is being said.

🌈 They take your baby and toddler on a sensory adventure. Each page is detailed with bright colourful illustrations and they all include an interactive ‘touch and feel’ element encouraging new vocabulary and understanding.

🌈 The language used within the books are great for describing and labelling animals, objects and body parts e.g. ears, tongue and paws etc.

🌈 With children that are older than 2 I would use the book to explore and understand the meaning of the describing words.

All in all, they are gorgeous books that are sure to keep baby and toddler engaged, whilst supporting their development.

These books are £6.99 with some reduced to £4.99 in the January sale!

Message me today for your order!

📌Just a note: I’m not a speech and language professional or expert... I just have a huge interest. This kind of reading is what has helped my children. If you’re after advice on S&L, contact a qualified therapist.

So I’m going to be showcasing some beautiful children’s books for you to see alongside my tutoring.

First up... What is snow?
I though it was quite appropriate after the little snow shower we had last week! ❄️🌨

This stunning picture book covers all those big questions about snow and answers them in a clear and simplistic way for young children.

What do I love about it? EVERYTHING! But I’ll try my best to round up my main reasons for loving this book 🤦‍♀️.

❄️ It promotes an understanding of the world around us. The seasons and weather are a part of the early years and KS1 curriculum so this could be used as a reading hook into a topic based on winter or the seasons.

❄️ A perfect book to use in your Science lessons as it explores all the things you can do with snow e.g. ‘roll it’, ‘melt it’, ‘build it etc. Lots of STEM opportunities here if you’re a teacher looking for a way to incorporate books into Science.

❄️ Excellent vocabulary within the book which can be shared with very young children. The book details lots of great new words to describe the texture and look of snow.

❄️Sensory play opportunities are amazing with this. I’ll need to do a separate post on all my ideas!

❄️ Lots of speech and language opportunities that could be incorporated into play activities linked to the book.

❄️ It’s interactive lift up flaps make it great for younger readers to explore. Also think of those fine motor skills as they are lifting and shutting the flaps 😀.

Oh an did I mention... it’s in the sale! Down from £7.99 to £4.99. Ask me how to order your copy today 😀.

🌟Tutoring Feedback 🌟

Some lovely feedback from my Autumn Tutoring Programme that took place between Sept & Dec. This feedback was from some of our mid- term reviews that I just haven’t had time to share with you all!

It makes me so happy to hear that the children I’m working with are growing in their confidence. We don’t just work on the learning, we also work on well-being and self- esteem by sharing lots of growth mindset and mindfulness techniques.
