10+ years experience of a results driven approach to coaching! 10 years, wow I'm getting old

12/01/2026

A question I was asked over the weekend, how do I get motivation to start running and work towards doing a 5k?

Here’s my bit on that, the thing you’re trying to achieve has to be more important to you than the dozens of other things you could do or end up with instead

It’s all good saying you want to run 5k but are you disinclined enough to realise we can say something but it’s the action takers that get the results they want

Are you willing to commit the time necessary instead of sitting on the sofa watching Netflix

If ultimately the answer is no and you sit on the sofa instead your saying to yourself, internally most likely, that being comfy on the sofa is more important than your 5k goals…

Going in to Tesco today reiterated what I already knew, I do things habitually and not because I need or want things and you do as well

I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I’ve wanted a Red Bull since the turn of the year, but I immediately wanted one as soon as I walked in to Tesco. A habit built over years that I’d ingrained in to my brain that if I go to Tesco I get a can

I can almost guarantee you do this, whether it’s with food, exercise or your day to day life

This is why I’m personally looking a short term goals through January to break habit’s and create new stronger habits for long term success and I think you need to too

Yesterday I spoke about people writing off the week based off of 1 bad day

That was born out of conversation I had with someone about what people really need in January, right now!

In my opinion you don’t need to be thinking about the summer, most people should be thinking how to make today, tomorrow, this week and this month a success

You need a level of accountability, you need someone/anyone/anything prompting you to stay on track and not ruin things in the short term

Write it down, post on social media that you’re doing something for people to check back on, tell your work colleagues, do whatever works for you!

Things to the extent of “I’ll sort it next week I’ve already messed this week up”

It’s Tuesday, literally the 2nd day of the week, and you’re willing to write off the whole week?

It’s literally the 6th day of the month and you want to write it off until the 12th?

Come on now!

You need to stop thinking about the long term right now, stop thinking about your summer holiday, what you’ll look like in 6 months time

Right now you need to keep yourself accountable day to day and nothing more, one step at a time!

2026 word of the year - DISCIPLINE

I’m not after motivation next year, I’m chasing being a little more disciplined!

See you in 2026

Another season done and dusted for the big lad

Another hat full of goals and assists

Another player of the year trophy

Another year I’m so proud of the young man and footballer he’s becoming

Another year the standards set are so incredibly high that even he doesn’t realise how well he’s doing

I love you Charlie! 💙

Some call them intervals, some call them sprints!

I think you should be doing them if you’re training for a race day!

Who’s going to complain about working on speed and moving faster?

Lace them up and get to stepping!

Slowly slowly does it!

Is it called a recovery run or an easy run? Call it what you want but be sure to add it to your weekly schedule

Maybe the most overlooked run, because let’s face it who wants to run slowly on purpose?

Helps with your recovery, help prevent injury, build base fitness levels, safely increase mileage when you see fit!

In short, you need a recovery run in your running schedule!

Tempo run…

The run most people talk about, but it’s also the run most people don’t have a clue about!

Tempo runs are there to challenge yourself mentally, increase and push your lactate threshold

Think comfortably hard, think a nice burn in your legs and lungs that you can maintain for a period of time

I’d argue to say that the closer you get to your race day the longer your tempo runs should be to prove to yourself that you’re more than capable of finishing your given race distance

Enjoy your Saturday,

All you running rockets I’m here to help!

All you athletes, professional, semi professional, amateur, hobbyists, I’m here to help!

Something I should have done a long time ago, but too much of a s**t bag to change, what a weapon!

Better late than never, I think, I hope!

See you down the road, see what I did there? Funny dad joke for you there 😬👀

Snacking made really simple, focus on protein!

Let’s not demonise fats and carbs, you won’t catch me telling you to stay away from either of those macronutrients but protein has got to be king if you’re looking to control your snacking throughout the day!

Hit me with a message if you fancy a more in depth chat about snacks and let’s see if I can help!

Have a good’un
