Happy birthday Amery Hill School!

85 years ago, the school first opened its doors on 17th April 1939, having been formed by the merging of Alton Senior Girls’ Church School and Alton Senior Boys’ Council School. It was originally called Alton Council Senior Mixed School and opened with Mr E Luke as Headmaster, with 390 students joining on the first day.

These photos taken in 1951 were kindly donated by Pat Chirgwin, a teacher in the 1950s. Thank you for sharing them!

Congratulations to Amery Hill School Alumni Chris Edwards on his promotion

with Band Sergeant Chris Edwards, who developed his early success on violin and tuba at Amery Hill School in Alton, Hampshire, by joining the RMBS in 1996 as a clarinet and violinist.
He has had an extremely varied 23 year career so far. Having deployed to Kosovo on Op. Argicola in 2000 as an ambulance driver (as well as providing musical support), and then in 2002/3 he helped provide cover during the Fireman's strikes, for Op. Fresco. In April 2007 Chris was one of the 90 RMBS ranks deployed as the Cyprus Reinforcement unit for two months, which was the first time that the RMBS had deployed independently at this scale, in their secondary role.
Chris's career highlight was an amazing music tour to Langkawi, Malaysia in 1999.
Chris completed the 2016 Bandmasters course and following recent selection, will be promoted to Band Colour Sergeant in 2020, and hopefully WO2 Bandmaster in the future. In his spare time he enjoys playing the violin in the folk group Thinker. Royal Navy Royal Marines
