Can you see all the rabbits?
We have been looking at a butterfly this afternoon. The children created their own beautiful butterflies using water colour paints and cotton buds.

Monday marked the last day of term at the Beehive with party style activities and a Leavers Ceremony. We are really proud of the children this year, they have achieved so much in extraordinary circumstances. Our Beehive parents have also been so flexible and supportive throughout the challenges of Covid and we thank you all.
We wish the Beehive Leavers 2021 every success as they move on to their new adventures πŸπŸ’•

Thursday took us to the woods for a fabulous forest day. We had a wild animal hunt and found a badger, a hedgehog, an owl, a Gruffalo and many more woodland creatures.
We went on a bear hunt, climbed a mountain and rode a dragon. We discovered a huge number of mini-beats under the cones and logs and tried to name them all; earwigs, woodlice, centipedes, slugs and worms.
We played with the parachute and finished with a picnic lunch.
The Children agreed it was The Best Day Ever!

Samson, our elderly Giant African Land Snail has been staying at Shalden this term. The children are fascinated by Samson and Samson is fascinated by the children.

This week the children have been developing their carpentry skills. Thinking about and producing their designs, the key to creativity in Early Years is focusing on the process, and our children really thought about their creations. Can you spot the sword, the aeroplane, the car, daddy pig or the elephant?

Today our we released our Butterflies into the meadow as they embark on their new adventure. What a journey it's been, look how tiny the were when they arrived.
As we've watched them grow, we have read the story: 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' - learning about healthy eating, the days of the week, growth and transition. The Children have learned new words such as metamorphosis, proboscus, chrysalis and emerge.
Releasing our butterflies is always an emotional moment as it represents the time of year that our older children are also entering a time of transition, and with just a week until the end of term, preparations for that time are well under way.

Help Rebuild Toy Shed at the Beehive at Shalden, organized by Jan Driver

Here it is! The Beehive shed fund raiser, please donate whatever you can, every little helps.
Please also like and share our page to spread the message far and wide x
Help the staff and Children at The Beehive Shalden to rebuild our outdoor toy shed. It may not sound very exciting but our old shed is 30 years old and falling down
We have some wonderful exciting outdoor equipment and toys that the children love to play with but in order to keep it safe and in good condition it needs storing in a brand new shed.
We have had some wonderful offers of help but now need to raise Β£1150 to cover the cost of the shed, base, hooks and internal shelving.
That's why we are asking for help and support from Beehive families, old beehive families, friends of the beehive and local people. If you've been to the Beehive in the last 30 years, you will have seen our old shed, please help us get a new one built that will store the toys of children for the next 30
If we are lucky enough to go beyond our target of Β£1150, additional funds will be used to further enhance our outdoor area for the children.

As we enter the last half term of the academic year, the children have been thinking about growth and transition. Most of our sunflowers have grown and are ready to go home, although some are only just emerging from the soil.
Our tiny baby caterpillars also arrived this week, watch this space to see what happens next πŸ›πŸ¦‹

***Beehive Shed Update***
We have had a wonderful offer from an ex-Beehive family to replace our shed with something a bit bigger and much much better. Bob Nash (Bob's Gates and Sheds) will be doing it for cost so including the base and some internal shelving, we need to raise around Β£1100.

Does anyone have any experience of setting up a fundraising page who would be happy to help me get started?

What a busy first half of the summer term we have had at the Beehive.
We have planted and looked after our sunflower seeds, which are just beginning to grow and have talked all about what plants need to grow.
There has been lots of teamwork,role-playing,mark making ,fine motor skills and most importantly fun, because we learn through play!
Happy half term to all our families, see you on June 7th.πŸ˜€

[05/13/21]   Hello lovely people - does anyone have any advice on printers? The printers at both Beehive settings are on their last legs. In the past we have usually picked up a fairly cheap home printers that last 3 to 4 years.
We only use between 20 to 100 printed sheets a week during term time so not looking for anything too industrial or expensive.
Any advice welcome x

A year ago today and we were deep into our first national lockdown. The world is still a little strange but we are so proud of the children at the Beehive and the way that they have adapted under extraordinary circumstances.

The Beehive book exchange and home learning packs ready for collection. All parents will now have their 10 minute visiting slots allocated. Looking forward to seeing you all x

Dear Parents, ex-parents, future parents and friends of the Beehive,

I am asking for some help and advice regarding the very old shed in the Beehive garden that we use for storing our outdoor toys. Listening to the wind last night has finally prompted me to reach out as nights like this always leave me terrified that the shed will finally collapse!

We urgently need to replace the shed, including creating a base for it to stand on.

In order to do this, we need to raise the money to cover the cost of this project. The current shed is 8x8 but we are hoping for something slightly bigger.

We have a very limited budget so I'm hoping some of our lovely supporters might be able to help us get started either with knowledgeable advice, practical help or fund raising support.

Thank you in advance for any support or ideas
Jan, Annette and the Beehive team x

If you go down to the woods today.....
We had such a fun time exploring the woods today. We found lots of holes that the children said Peter Rabbit lived in, a dragon tree to climb on and lots of space to run.
We are so lucky to have such an enriching natural environment to explore on our doorstep. Children's learning happens naturally through experiencing the world around us. πŸ₯°

The children noticed the flag was flying at the Beehive today. We talked about the colours and shapes on the flag and learnt that it is called the Union Jack. One of the children told us it was the Queen's birthday today and that is why the flag was flying. There was great amazement when we said that the Queen was 95,that's a really BIG number!
This afternoon some of our older children made their very own Union Jack flags and we said Happy Birthday to the Queen. They are very beautiful,I'm sure the Queen would be super proud!

All aboard the Beehive Bus!!
We have had a super couple of weeks with our focus book 'Naughty Bus'
Our activities included making our very own buses using recycled materials and real tools. Driving buses through beans just like the naughty bus.
Our role play area turned into a bus and bus stop where the children all lined up with their money to buy a ticket. Our bus took us on holiday, to the seaside, the toy shop, the supermarket and the train station to name but a few places. A big Thankyou to Simon and his colleagues at Stagecoach for the personalised tickets, they were an enormous hit!!
We have also had a winch and pulley just like in the story to rescue the bus which required teamwork and turn taking.
As always the best learning is through play!

A few extra activities from a very busy December

Photos from The Beehive at Shalden's post 18/12/2020

What a fabulous day we had on our last day of term. The children made crowns and reindeer food, they sung, danced and enjoyed a selection of party food.

The highlight of our day was the visit from Father christmas with Ben Hampshire who stepped in to cover for Rudolph by providing a mini digger to carry the presents.

A big thank you to Santa and Ben who both took time away from their own Alton based businesses to treat the children at the end of a very unusual and difficult year. As a small business ourselves we would like to give a quick shout-out to them, Jamie Knight (Santa's Alton based agent) from PSE Strategic Consultants Ben Hampshire from Sutton Park Equipment

We would also like to thank our amazing Families for all their support this year. As a staff team, we feel very lucky to have you all. We were also completely overwhelmed with the beautiful cards and gifts this Christmas.

Finally, a big thank you to Shalden Village for the ongoing support we have received over the past year.

Wishing everyone a very Happy, restful and above all healthy Christmas

Jan, Annette, Karen, Avril and Ellie ❀
