STEM in early years can look so different depending on ages and activities.

This is how it looked for my little explorer this morning....

How to save the animals floating in the lava, building the balance beams, practicing balancing skills, trying not to step in the lava whilst saving the animals.

All that before the volcano goes off....

Was the special mission complete?
Yes it was

What a week we are having so far 🍦📡🚀🌕🌖🌘

Monday a trip to Snugburys to enjoy a walk through the wildflowers and find the wicker structures. We saw lots of bees and butterflies flying around. Of course we had to have a yummy ice cream whilst we were there... be rude not to.

Tuesday we went to Jodrell Bank where the children had a go at all the hands on activities, watched a short film and coloured in a picture of a rocket.

This morning we have made our own eclipse pictures, decorating the sun and painting the moon using tin foil. We talked about how the moon was going to almost cover the sun tonight. We also talked how important it was to never look at the sun with your naked eyes.

It's always hard when my little explorers leave to go into their next adventures.
Today was the last day for one of my explorers and is going to be missed by us all.

For his last adventure we went to Tatton for The Winnie the Pooh trail. 🍯🍯🐻

We had lots of fun finding the different signs, having a go at the activities, balancing on logs, tree hugging and having a picnic.

We all love a day out that's free. Well that's what we've had today thanks to the community and Congleton Town Council their Play Days which are on every Tuesday with different themes. Today's theme was nature.

My little explorers had a great time making a nature picture, playing with mini beasts, decorating a pot and planting a plant in it, making a badge or keyring, planting marigold seeds and drawing with chalks.

After exploring all the activities we went to the park where we had our picnic, looked for bees and butterflies in the bee garden and having a play in the play area before going back home.

A trip to the park this morning, so much learning and seeing wildlife in their environment.

* Following instructions- Holding the pushchair or hands
* Road safely- looking and listening for cars
* Seeing sweetcorn growing in fields
* Seeing bees on sunflowers
* Talking about sizes whilst looking at the sunflowers "not as big as you Sue, your head's bigger" 😂😂
* Helping friends and taking turns
* Bring brave and going down the big side
* Watching a rabbit eating grass then hopping back into the woods. Starting conversations about what the rabbit is doing, Mummy Daddy baby, going to it's home
* Physical development climbing, running going up and down slopes
* Seeing a caterpillar on the ground "looks like a bee black and yellow" watching it until it went down a hole in the ground
* Seeing 2 squirrels one jumping in the trees
* Watching and counting crows on the grass we counted 5

So many opportunities for learning from a trip to the park 🐛🚶🌻🐰🐦‍⬛🐝🛝

The children are really interested in butterflies atm. We have a couple of buddleia's in the garden which the children enjoy watching the butterflies on them. 🦋🦋

One child brought a leaf in which looked like the hungry caterpillar had been nibbling on it. So there was only one thing to do... read The Hungry Caterpillar story. 🐛

We have been on a nature hunt looking for butterflies and we weren't disappointed we saw lots of peacocks, cabbage whites and a little blue butterfly flying around and landing on leaves in front of us.

Today we have been doing one of our favourite activities... Hapa Zome ( flower bashing). We spoke about how butterflies are symmetrical looking at pictures. The children had pink, yellow and orange flowers to use. They pulled the petals off, placing them on the butterfly then using a hammer they started banging. Once finished they opened it up and we're surprised how they looked as it was their first time making these. Don't they look beautiful.
It was lovely seeing how proud they were of their butterflies, telling my son what they had been doing and showing him. When parents arrived showing them and demonstrating how they used the hammer.🔨🔨

We've been on an adventure today and went to the Royal Cheshire Show.
Before we went we chatted about what we might see and what would they like to see.
My little explorers had a great day seeing all the animals, there was even a "wow" when they saw the horses.

We saw bees and tried some very tasty honey.
They had a go at milking a cow.
Oh and the very yummy ice cream 😋

Well what a beautiful week we had last week.

Here is a taste of what we were up to....

Exploring ice, how it feels, using our water colours to paint it. Checking it to see what happens when it gets warm... then finding only water once it had all melted.

Lots of water play, catching balls and rolling them down the guttering.

Transporting water to the mud kitchen to make cups of tea using mint from the herb garden.

Tipping and pouring water into different containers and the water wall.

Using sponges to develop hand muscles when squeezing water out and into different containers. Not forgetting washing the dinosaurs.

🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 World bee day 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

To celebrate world bee day we have used our play dough with our bee hives, hexagonal shapes, bees and flowers.

We talked about the shapes, counting the edges, named the hive and talked about how important bees are to us all.

They rolled the dough, pushed shapes into it and pretended to be bees.

Whilst playing in the garden we found a bee busy at work on our mud kitchen herb garden.🐝🐝🐝

Oh how I love it when a concept becomes becomes reality.

Equipment moved around so it's under our covered play area. Water table and wall, messy tray so many different ways to use these. Wooden stumps to be used for play dough, blackboard, mark making etc.....

Woodbark arrived today to freshen it all up.

Can't wait for my little explorers to see it Monday
