Want to help your child become a more independent learner?

Next time they ask, "What do I do?", resist the temptation to immediately tell them.

Try these three questions instead:
1. What do YOU think you need to do?
2. Where could you find the information?
3. What have you tried already?

You're still supporting them but you're keeping the thinking with the child.

That matters enormously as they move towards secondary school, where adults won't always be beside them prompting every next step.

Try this if homework is dragging on forever...

For many children, one focused 20-minute block is more productive than an hour spent staring at a page, arguing, getting distracted and becoming frustrated.

A few tips:

🐝 One task at a time
🐝 Phone away
🐝 Clear workspace
🐝 Short break afterwards
🐝 Stop before frustration takes over

💛 The goal isn't to sit there the longest.

💛 The goal is productive learning.

💛 Confidence and learning are more connected than we sometimes realise.

It can start with something really small

🐝 A child doesn’t understand part of a lesson.
🐝 They don’t want to put their hand up.
🐝 They stop asking questions.
🐝 A small gap starts to grow.

And before long, they begin thinking:

“I’m just not good at this.”

That’s the confidence cycle.

And once a child starts believing they can’t do something, they’re often less willing to try, which can make the problem grow even further. The good news?

🐝 The cycle can be broken.

✅ Encourage questions.
✅ Celebrate effort, not just correct answers.
✅ Remind them that getting something wrong is part of learning.
✅ And create opportunities where they feel safe saying:

“I don’t understand this yet.”

Sometimes the first thing a child needs isn’t more homework.

It’s the confidence to ask for help. 💛

😂 Has your new S1 pupil come home looking like they've just completed a 12-hour shift?

Secondary school is exhausting at first!

Think about everything their brain is processing:

🏫 Finding classrooms
👩‍🏫 Different teachers
📚 New subjects
🎒 Remembering equipment
👫 New social situations
📝 Homework
⏰ New routines

So if they're exhausted, grumpy or asleep on the sofa at 7pm

Give them a little grace. 😂

Their brain is working overtime.
