In this warm weather, any training equipment left outdoors can get very hot.

Regularly testing the touch-temperatures of equipment is strongly advised to ensure members don’t get hurt.

Information from www.burncentrecare.co.uk states that burns can be caused by temperatures as low as 44 °C.

Surface temperatures of external gym equipment, especially mats, rigs, boxes and metal/dark coloured objects, can easily exceed this, which can cause pain and injury.

Monitoring your equipment, keeping records, covering and re-testing to ensure temperatures stay below 44°C, will help mitigate this risk.

Disallowing use of hot equipment until a safe temperature is achieved is advisable.

Any indoor equipment in direct sunlight may also be affected and is worth including in any testing procedure you have. Setting a slightly lower temperature threshold for your business may also be prudent to ensure safety is paramount.

Get in touch if you want more information.

Do you have front-of-house, reception, admin staff or even trainers who use Display Screen Equipment (DSE) such as computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc, for more than a hour at a time as part of their job?

If so, you have responsibilities to assess the workstation and equipment, ensure regular breaks are taken, provide eye tests if requested, and ensure training is given.

The HSE have a checklist that can be used for the assessment.

Online training courses are readily available and can be found with a quick Google.

Breaks should be factored into workdays and/or staff handbooks and procedures.

Training should be monitored using Staff Development Procedures. There are also handy posters available to display in areas where staff use DSE to ensure regular reminders are in place.

Eye test needs should be discussed during Staff Reviews, although staff should feel comfortable raising any issues at any time.

One of the benefits of a fully integrated management system is the way that documents interlink and work together to form a robust, auditable trail of reference and proof of compliance.

Here we show how both Ts & Cs and Gym Rules are covered in at least 5 different ways in our system.

A quick internet search of fines and/or bad press from accidents or legislation breaches can be eye opening.

Where fines have been imposed, these are huge and have the ability to cripple businesses.

Bad press can tarnish reputations and lose you business.

Make sure you know your legal obligations and have the correct measures in place to protect you. Ignorance of the law is not a valid defence, and mitigation measures need to be effective.

Do you have a plan to keep your members safe on their return to the gym?

Trainers should be particularly mindful of members who return to intense physical exercise after a prolonged time off, as they can be susceptible to developing symptoms of rhabdomyolysis. The events of the last year have meant that this could be the vast majority of your clientele.

Safety is paramount. Make sure to increase intensity and movement volume gradually. Make members aware of the signs and symptoms of rhabdo, and what to do if they experience these.

Communicate your plan and reasoning behind the steady return so they do not overreach too soon.

Keep records to show you have taken these steps to ensure their safety and comply with your duty of care as a business.

One of the first changes Brexit has brought is the different Conformity Assessment product marking requirements for goods placed on the market in Great Britain.

The UKCA marking came into effect on 1st January 2021 and in most cases will gradually replace the CE mark by the end of 2021. In reality this will probably mean equipment is marked with both a CE and a UKCA mark due to being sold in a variety of countries.

This only applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland is still subject to the CE mark.

If you are buying any equipment that should be covered by a CE mark (rowers, bikes, ergs, runners, even TV and office equipment), ask the manufacturer about UKCA compliance. Any equipment wholly manufactured before 1st Jan 2021 but sold afterwards with just a CE Mark will be valid, but only until 1st Jan 2022, when the UKCA mark must be displayed.

What’s in the cleaning products you use?

This is an extract from a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for cleaning wipes marketed as suitable for gym use.

One of the chemicals listed has been banned in the EU* since 2016 (photo 2) and is a known carcinogen.
(*Brexit has not had an effect on this).

It has since been allowed in very low concentrations (up to 0.1%) but the only information in this SDS is that it is present in concentrations of
