Absolutely thrilled to announce that as well as our professional singers at the event, we also have two students from Alford Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, who will be performing at intervals throughout the weekend in the music gazebo in the Market place. Thank you Poppy Efemey and George Elson, for all the hard work learning and practising 1940s songs for us. You will be amazing! Thanks also to Mr Wray, music teacher at Qegs for coordinating the arrangements.

[06/26/21]   Further to yesterday’s post regarding a suspected covid-19 case, we are pleased to advise you that the result has come back NEGATIVE. Therefore, all Y12 pupils are expected to come back into school on Monday 28 June as normal.

[06/25/21]   Unfortunately, an individual in our Y12 bubble is symptomatic and is awaiting the result of a PCR test. As a precaution we have taken the decision to send home Y12 pupils to self isolate until 5 July, or until we have received confirmation of a negative test.

During this period of home study, work will be uploaded to the home learning platform by teachers and through teams, so please do monitor this.

Should you have any pressing questions, please do feel free to email Mr Thompson who will be monitoring emails and will respond as quickly as possible.

[03/16/21]   Today, we should have been celebrating Founders’ Day in our 455th year as a school.

What are your memories of celebrating Founders’ Day at QEGS?

Founders’ Day honours our ancestors: Francis Spanning, who appointed 6 local inhabitants to be governors and gave them £50 to invest in the setting up of a school in 1566; William Cecil, Lord Burghley, one of the school’s first patrons who petitioned Queen Elizabeth I to grant a Charter to the Free Grammar School in Alford for ‘the education, instruction and bringing up of children and youth forever to continue’ and Sir W Lancelot Travers, an old boy of the School set up the Travers Trust to provide scholarships to local pupils who go on to University education. Whilst looking through our archived material, we found a record of the Quatercentenary in the 1966 copy of ‘The Alfordian’ which spoke of the celebrations and referred to the event as a ‘reet good do’ and ‘the most memorable social event in the four centuries of the school’s history’ – I sincerely hope that next year we can return to an inclusive celebration, when the school can gather once again to remember our rich history and have a memorable event!

[03/16/21]   We are looking to appoint a Teacher of English from September 2021 to join our well-established English department.

The English department attains excellent results, and is experienced and supportive. It currently comprises a subject leader, two full time teachers and one part-time teacher.

All pupils follow GCSE courses for English and English Literature. At A Level, English Literature and English Language are offered. We currently follow the AQA specification for GCSE and A Level English Literature and students follow the Eduqas specification for A Level English Language.

The successful candidate will be suitably qualified to teach English Language and English Literature through all key stages and have experience of, or an interest, in teaching English Language and English Literature to A Level, be passionate about the subject and strive for the highest standards.

Applicants should note that this post is subject to enhanced DBS clearance and applications from NQTs are welcomed as well as those from more experienced teachers.

Deadline: 12 noon on Friday 26 March 2021

Back To School: Testing

[03/07/21]   Thank you to everyone who supported in any way either with undertaking a test or supporting the testing process. We are delighted to be in a position to fully open on Monday and look forward to seeing students back in school.

We are aware of a number of tests where the national system has not communicated the results as expected. We would like to reassure parents that all tests conducted were negative and we will be in touch with public health England to work out what happened with their system on Monday.

[03/03/21]   We would like to request that students take a Lateral Flow Test prior to returning to school on Monday 8 March, at the following sessions:

Thursday 4th March
Year 7 8.30 - 10.45
Year 8 11.00 – 13.15
Year 9 13.30 – 15.30

Friday 5th March
Year 10 8.30 – 10.45
Year 11 11.00 – 13.15
Year 12 and 13 - 13.30 – 15.30

Test results will automatically be sent to a parent's email and mobile number within 24 hours of taking the test.

Please ensure you have returned your completed Lateral Flow Consent Form by Wednesday, which can be found with the Tuesday Letter on our website. Only those who have completed this form under 16 years, will be able to take a test. Students 16 and over can consent for themselves but they will need to complete a form to this effect upon arrival at the test centre.

The test is not compulsory: however, it is highly recommended.

Schools and childcare settings: return in January 2021

Following the Government’s announcement , we’ve now had chance to access the guidance which states that “…pupils in exam year groups (primarily years 11 & 13) are expected to access on-site education…All other pupils should not attend that week and must be provided with remote education until 11 January when they should return to school and resume face-to-face attendance.”

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/schools-and-childcare-settings-return-in-january-2021/schools-and-childcare-settings-return-in-january-2021

Consequently, the following arrangements will apply here at QEGS:

Years 7-10 inclusive should have online learning provided for 5-8 January inclusive.

Years 11, 12 and 13 will be in school as normal from Tuesday 5 January.

Vulnerable children and children of critical workers (Y7-10) may also be in school and would be put in a room with computer access so they could access the online provision set for their groups.

From Monday 11 January all pupils will be back in school as normal.

In a year where being able to celebrate Christmas seems to be limited, students at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar, Alford have joined forces to bring some much needed Christmas cheer to their local community. Students generously gave Christmas treats and much needed items to be donated to the Alford Foodstore and local elderly members of Alford Day Centre. Students made up gift hampers to be delivered to local residents, which all included a selection of festive food together with cards, letters and poems by pupils in Years 7 and 10. Headteacher, Mr Glen Thompson said “We are delighted to be able to continue to work alongside our local community especially in these challenging circumstances”.

[11/20/20]   We are hoping to fill our school with images of the school from the past to celebrate our students present and past.

We have found a number of whole school photographs and archived memorabilia in the school, but are looking to increase this if we can to give a real flavour of the school’s history. We are appealing to ex-students and staff who might have old photographs of the school, including whole school photos, to ask if you would allow the school to scan or copy them or even donate them to us. Anything you might have stashed away would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Mr Thompson

[11/18/20]   Dear all,

I am writing on behalf of the Governing Board at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar in Alford.

We are looking to recruit governors from our community and would be grateful if you could give this some consideration or tag in someone within the community who would be interested in the role. We would be particularly interested to hear from anyone that has experience in at least one, or more of the following areas:

* general business management
* legal and compliance, in particular charity law
* finance and accounting
* HR.

School governors make a valuable contribution to children’s education, opportunities, and futures. Being a governor is a hugely rewarding role with the chance to make a real difference to our students and the local community.

Please contact me at [email protected] or on 01507 362403 for more information.
