Today’s reading is from Professor Andrew McDonnell of Studio III. This book focuses on the low arousal approach, empathy and compassion. A large emphasis of the book is put on our own behavior in helping those in distress that are struggling. The book reminds us that we should not focus on behaviors but rather the stress and trauma below the surface.

Are We Asking the Right Questions About Behaviour?
Web Conference, Tuesday 20th October, 10am (BST)

Whilst there can be no doubt that behavioural psychology has had a significant impact on the lives of people with a variety of different conditions, the last 20 years has seen a narrative of behaviour support which can be regarded as formulaic and, in some circumstances, dogmatic. This event will focus on changing the focus of the conversation from the behaviour of individuals to a shared understanding that all successful interventions require positive relationship building. Speakers Andy McDonnell, Gareth Morewood and Damian Milton will attempt to reframe the debate around behaviour in three thought-provoking talks.

Join us for a full day of interactive discussions by booking now: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_minDsLU1RJ2vl6vetbv4yQ

Our Story

The Studio III group promotes the ideals, philosophies and benefits of non-aversive behaviour management.

Studio III Training Systems was the first company to be formed from a fusion of many skills drawn from academic researchers and applied clinicians. We provide evidenced-based training in de-escalation and physical interventions using a humanitarian approach to reflective practice and trauma-informed behavioural management. This training has developed over the years to include individualised behaviour management and support plans and the promotion of other pro-active approaches (see http://www.studi03.org for more information).

From this was born Studio III Clinical Services, a psychology based provider of specialist input to services for both children and adults across the EU. This involves tailored support plans for individuals, families, services and staff groups, including consultation and advice, assessments, intervention, and training in order to provide bespoke support for individual service users and organisations.

We are the originators of the Low Arousal Approach, which is now widely used across the UK and Europe. This is an approach towards behaviour management that focuses on the reduction of stress, fear and frustration, and ultimately seeks to prevent aggression and crisis situations. The Low Arousal Approach seeks to understand the role of the ‘situation’ in challenging behaviour by identifying triggers and using low intensity strategies and solutions to avoid punitive consequences for individuals with additional needs (see http://www.lowarousal.com for more information).

The Atlass programme is an international training course with a stress management approach to supporting people with a range of conditions across the lifespan, including autism, acquired brain injury, dementia, intellectual disabilities and trauma. We currently run programmes across the EU for carers, families, and support staff (for more information please see https://www.studio3.org/atlass).
