Today we found something very exciting in the new Pre-school garden, a little egg shell hiding in the grass. The children were very curious to where it had come from and searched the garden for clues. They found some feathers, we talked about the kind of birds that we see in the garden and attempted to identify the bird by the feathers. They children decided to build a nest for the little egg shell, collecting twigs and leaves and soil, working together to build a cosy home for the egg shell.
We talked about how we usually see nest in trees, and asked the children if the nest would be safe on the ground, the children showed their understanding of dangers to birds, talking about the nest being stood on and being at risk of predators such as cats or foxes. The Pre-school children then created a protective fence around the nest. The children handled the egg shell with care, understanding that the egg shell is fragile and showed awareness of germs, washing their hands well after handling the egg shell.
