There’s a common misconception that people with dyslexia are not smart. Olivia’s story proves this isn’t the case!
Despite preliminary testing showing that Olivia had significant issues with spelling, she was told because she got A's in her exams that she couldn't be dyslexic!
After a diagnosis at University, Olivia spoke openly about her dyslexia to create a community to help others and went on to succeed at Medical School.

Dyslexia is estimated to affect approximately 10% of the population. That’s 3 children in every classroom.
It’s important we don’t ignore the early signs and delay identifying dyslexia; This can lead to children having low self esteem and feeling demotivated at school.
Difficulties with memory, organisation, spelling, reading and writing are the key indicators. If your child is 7 or over and you have concerns about their inability to learn (despite lots of input at home and school), could they have dyslexia?
"But She's So Smart!" - Orton-Gillingham Weekly Years ago, I mentioned to someone that my daughter had dyslexia. The reply was, “But she’s so smart.” That comment made me realize that many people don’t understand dyslexia. Some Consider Dyslexia a Gift Having dyslexia does not mean you also have a lower IQ. In fact, it is often quite the ...

Seeing the success of other dyslexic people can motivate struggling learners. Knowing that other people have succeeded despite their dyslexia can lead to a new determination in our children and pupils.
Finding a few minutes to discuss this with your class or with your child will let them know that you expect great things of them. For dyslexic learners, knowing that someone believes in you can often be the stepping stone that is needed to achieve great things!
Happy Friday everyone!

At Dyslexia Lanarkshire, we are discussing not only the impact that dyslexia can have on life and learning, but the vital strategies that teachers and parents can use to support each of the individual strategies
We have already spoken about "What dyslexia is not" in a recent post, so let's discuss what it actually is!
Our range of scenarios starts with REMEMBERING INSTRUCTIONS. Issues with working memory mean that people with dyslexia often struggle to hold on to several pieces of information at the same time.
Yet, how often as a parent do we tell our children to do more than one thing at the same time? I'm definitely guilty of saying "Can you go brush your teeth then put your shoes on? Oh and make sure you put your packed lunch in your bag!"
Or as a teacher, "once you're seated if you can put you jotter on desk, take jackets off please and put bags on the floor. The session started is on the whiteboard!" 😳😳😳
When we have moved on to the third instruction, the first one has fallen off the proverbial "instruction shelf" in the brain." This is an example of poor working memory.
The strategies below will help dyslexic children, pupils and adults. They can also be used in emloyer/ employee situation across every industry.
Dyslexia Lanarkshire, based in Airdrie, can provide support and advice to families living with dyslexia and can offer dyslexia assessments and tutoring across Lanarkshire.
