Heart attack and cardiac arrest are not the same thing. Knowing the difference could save a life.

❤️ Heart attack: a blocked artery. The heart keeps beating. The person is usually conscious, in pain and may be breathless. Call 999 and keep them calm and still.

💛 Cardiac arrest: the heart stops. The person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Start CPR immediately and get a defibrillator.

Both are emergencies. Both need 999. But the response is different.

Severe bleeding is one of the first aid emergencies where the first few minutes are critical.

Here is what to do:

✅ Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound
✅ Keep pressing, do not remove the dressing to check
✅ If blood soaks through, add more material on top
✅ Lay the person down and raise the injured limb if possible
✅ Call 999

For catastrophic bleeding, a tourniquet may be needed. This is a key skill covered in our Catastrophic Bleeding course.

Do you know what to do if someone has a seizure?

Most people panic. Here is what actually helps:

✅ Stay calm and stay with them
✅ Note the time the seizure starts
✅ Clear the area of anything that could cause injury
✅ Do NOT hold them down or put anything in their mouth
✅ Once it stops, put them in the recovery position

Call 999 if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, if they do not regain consciousness, or if it is their first known seizure.
