Do you have a skill, profession or passion you would like to share with our Helkats community?

SHSK is built on a generous spirit of sharing and we are enormously grateful to the parents who give their time and expertise to enrich our community.

Last year, SHSK parent Mrs Smith — mother to Amos, who has Down’s syndrome, and a Trustee of Down Syndrome Oxfordshire — spoke to Year 8 about the realities of life with Down’s syndrome.

Drawing on both personal experience and her advocacy work, she challenged outdated stereotypes, dispelled common myths and explored the barriers and discrimination people with learning disabilities can face at school, in the workplace and across wider society.

The girls considered the power of language: how the way we speak about people helps shape how they are seen and treated. Above all, they discussed the importance of including people with disabilities in the conversation — “with them, not for them.”

There were thoughtful questions, a brilliantly funny film and to finish, a Makaton-signed rendition of a Queen classic. It was a great, educational morning.

Our next talk will be for parents, led by fellow SHSK parent Mrs Katie Barber of Oxford Menopause, tackling the important subject of menopause ahead of World Menopause Day.

Before we broke up for the summer holidays, we gathered for PA drinks to thank everyone for their help throughout the year. In the balmy rush to dash off into the summer sunset, we didn’t manage to share the photos—so here they are now.
