Generations of Radley rowers returned to the Boathouse on Sunday for this year's Mariners' Challenge.

More than a hundred members of the rowing community gathered to watch the Mariners take on the 1st VIII, celebrate the naming of 15 boats after ORs who represented their countries at Junior World Championships, and unveil a memorial bench honouring Malcolm Mace's 38 years as Radley Boatman. What a wonderful afternoon of competition and nostalgia – thank you to everyone who joined us!

🏈ORs were in action on and off the pitch last month, with strong showings at both the Lloyd's 7s and Richmond 7s tournaments.

From the overwhelming number of OR insurance professionals at the Lloyd's 7s (surprise, surprise!) to the Serpents reaching the Cup semi-finals in Richmond, it was another excellent example of ORs' continued passion for the game.

What have you been up to? Each year, ORs flick straight to the News & Notes section of the Old Radleian magazine to see what their mates have sent in – and the shortest (and silliest) updates are usually the best.

Startups, recent obsessions, golf handicaps, DIY attempts, charity challenges, unexpected side quests, and niche endurance nonsense – whatever it is, we want to hear it.

Last week, more than forty ORs from the 1987–92 year group gathered for drinks at the Lamb & Flag pub in Oxford, with around twenty staying on for dinner afterwards. Many had not seen or spoken to each other in the 34 years since leaving Radley! A few made magnificent efforts, flying in from Uganda, the US and the Netherlands.

Four of the group stayed on for a trip to the College to revisit some of their favourite spots and see what had changed. It was lovely to have you back, chaps!

If you want to arrange a reunion, we can help you get in touch with your Radley peers. And, if you meet up, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

Heroes of Our School – 1/14: The Sailor (1957) ⛵

Here is the first in a set of fourteen character profiles from The Radleian, originally published during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
(‘Theodora’ was the name of the fondly remembered College vessel.)

---

‘Every summer, we are faced with the familiar phenomenon which we know as the Sailor, or Sailing Club Member. We are faced with him in the most unexpected of places – not to mention clothes.

The Carpentry Shop and the Art School are among his favourite haunts. The Old Gym he cheerfully regards as his own. The river, oddly enough, he is inclined to cold shoulder. He prefers the Gravel Pits, where only Sailors, and of course the C.C.F. in its brighter moments, are known to tread – or rather float.

So much for his habitat – now for his plumage. This is usually of an indiscriminate mud colour. He wears grey gym shoes, old cut-down shorts or jeans – preferably paint-splodged – a huge blue sweater with the word “THEODORA” painted amateurishly on the back, and a hat like a tea cosy on his head.

His clothes, be they everyday or sailing kit, are invariably dirty. When he is asked why, he will probably reply: “Because I like wearing dirty clothes.” That, at any rate, is how it appears to the non-initiated, the general public.

Add to this a good line in patter when he is late for everything – another of his little habits – and you have your sailor: lawless, ubiquitous, happy, and unbelievably filthy. Funnily enough, he also seems to manage to win his races.’

📸 - Sailing in 1950, 1966, 1974 and 2015, Theodora in 1966, the 1973 1st VI.

❓ 💬 Were you a Radley Sailor? If so … are you still wearing your cut-down shorts and Theodora sweater?

Sun, sport and staggeringly questionable recovery schedules on the Radley Keys (OR Football) tour of Marbella. ☀️⚽⛳🎾

The touring party of 13 split into Team Sloan vs Team Williams for a fiercely contested round robin of football, padel, and golf, with Team Williams ultimately lifting the trophy. Elsewhere: plenty of beach time, plenty of beers, one 7am finish, and a notable Saturday collapse from one player, who unfortunately failed to recover in time for the second evening at Linekers.

MVP honours went to Ollie Donaldson. RadSoc is still reviewing whether endurance counts as a sporting discipline …
