In a world where AI can pretty much translate for us, it's important to consider now more than ever why we really learn languages and what the value is in teaching them at schools.
Being able to communicate with the world is a useful skill and can open many doors, but to young people today (in the Anglophone sphere especially), it can seem like a lot of effort with little rational. Why bother learning a language when everyone else can speak English, or when AI can just translate for you?
My experience of language learning, meeting people from different cultures and living abroad has expanded my world beyond my imagination and completely changed the way I think, communicate and how I live my life.
We often think of school as a place of academic learning, but it's also about raising the next generation to be good, kind people that will look after our world. And I believe language learning is fundamental to achieving exactly that.
