Also with us again this week has been the plant ecology team from CEH. They’ve been working with Dr Will Stiles from the Department of Life Sciences to test the longer-term effects of atmospheric pollution on moorland plots set up 20+ years ago 🌱

It’s always fun to work with the latest technologies!😆 We had this classic out today to turn Miscanthus into small bales for colleagues ahead of the Royal Welsh Show next week. If you’re at the show see if you can spot them on the IBERS stand 👀

This was the last week our wonderful year in industry students Lauren and Blanca were both in and they treated us to a couple of great talks on what they’d learnt while they were with us. We’re going to miss you both! Good luck with your final year studies🍀

Using aerial surveys Dr Toby Driver and colleagues from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales recently identified the site of a previously undiscovered Roman fort on land at Pwllpeiran 🗡️ This is a really exciting find as it confirms a second campaign route for the Roman army into mid Wales along the Ystwyth, and crucially into the metal-mining regions. Most information to date had related to a route along the Wye valley.

The camp occupies a position on moorland sloping to the south-west, now used for peatland restoration and grassland trials by IBERS PwllPeiran. It lies on open ground close to the southern edg...

🚜 International Archives Day | Research that reshaped the uplands

This Juno plough was used in the 1930s Cahn Hill Improvement Scheme at Pwllpeiran part of Sir George Stapledon’s vision to restore productivity to upland landscapes.

By combining new grass varieties with mechanised land improvement, IBERS researchers dramatically increased pasture productivity – work that later proved crucial during the Second World War.

Today, while drones and remote sensing have replaced caterpillar tractors, the research drivers remain familiar: food security, efficiency and rural sustainability.

🚜 Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Archifau | Ymchwil a ail-luniodd yr ucheldiroedd

Defnyddiwyd yr aradr Juno hwn yn y 1930au ar Gynllun Gwelliant Cahn Hill ym Mhwllpeiran - rhan o weledigaeth Syr George Stapledon i adfer cynhyrchedd yn nhirweddau’r ucheldiroedd.
Drwy gyfuno amrywogaethau glaswellt newydd â gwella’r tir yn beirianyddol, roedd ymchwilwyr IBERS yn codi cynhyrchiant yn enfawr - gwaith a ddaeth yn gymorth hanfodol yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd.

Heddiw, er bod dronau a synhwyro o bell wedi cymryd lle’r tractorau treigl, mae ymchwil yn dal i gael ei hysgogi gan ddiogelu cyflenwadau bwyd, effeithlonrwydd, a chynaliadwyedd cefn gwlad.
