Meet the Team: Mark Needham (Ned)

Bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world farming is at the heart of what Mark Needham (better known as Ned) does.

As an Agri Engagement Manager at IBERS, Ned works closely with farmers, advisors, agri-businesses and policymakers. His role is all about two-way knowledge exchange, bringing real challenges from the field into research design, and translating scientific outcomes into practical, on-farm solutions that make a difference.

What Ned enjoys most is being out in the industry; attending events, meeting people, and helping ensure that IBERS’ research delivers genuine impact. Just as importantly, he makes sure those working on the ground have a voice in shaping the research itself.

One of his proudest achievements is helping to build the network and knowledge platform for the Biomass Connect project, strengthening collaboration between science and industry.

Outside of work, Ned is deeply rooted in rural life. He’s a registered sheep shearing instructor with the British Wool Marketing Board, spends time coaching and managing junior rugby teams, and is often back on the farm looking after the flock.

Cwrdd â’r Tîm: Mark Needham (Ned)

Mae pontio’r gagendor rhwng ymchwil flaengar a ffermio yn y byd go iawn yn greiddiol i bopeth mae Mark Needham (neu Ned fel yr adwaenir ef) yn ei wneud.

Ac yntau’n Rheolwr Meithrin Cyswllt Amaeth yn IBERS, mae Ned yn cydweithio’n agos â ffermwyr, cynghorwyr, amaeth-fusnesau a llunwyr polisi. Mae ei swydd yn ymwneud â chyfnewid gwybodaeth, dod â heriau o’r caeau go iawn i waith dylunio ymchwil, a throi canlyniadau gwyddonol yn gamau ymarferol sy’n gwnaeth gwahaniaeth ar y fferm.

Yr hyn y mae Ned yn ei fwynhau fwyaf yw’r cyswllt â’r diwydiant, mynd i ddigwyddiadau, cwrdd â phobl, a helpu i sicrhau bod ymchwil IBERS yn creu effaith go iawn. Yr un mor bwysig yw ei waith yn sicrhau bod y rhai sy’n gweithio ar lawr gwlad yn cael llais wrth lunio’r gwaith ymchwil ei hun.

Un o’i gyflawniadau y mae’n ymfalchïo ynddo fwyaf yw helpu i adeiladu rhwydwaith a llwyfan gwybodaeth y prosiect Cyswllt Biomas, sy’n cryfhau’r cydweithredu rhwng gwyddoniaeth a diwydiant.

Y tu allan i’r gwaith, mae Ned yn byw a bod yng nghefn gwlad. Mae’r hyfforddwr cneifio defaid - cofrestredig â Bwrdd Marchnata Gwlân Prydain - yn hyfforddi a rheoli timau rygbi ieuenctid, ac yn aml mae yn ôl ar ei fferm yn gofalu am y ddiadell.

The weather played ball today and allowed us to do the drone mission part of a project to look at whether synthetic aperture radar can be used to quantify the rhizome under Miscanthus plants.

Next week, we'll dig up some plants and weigh the below ground rhizome to provide the real world data that will hopefully allow us to develop a model linking the radar data to the weights.

Quantifying below ground biomass is a key stepping stone that in future should allow us to reward farmers for carbon storage.

This work is being carried out with the support of Supergen Bioenergy Hub.

Chwaraeodd y tywydd ei ran heddiw a chaniataodd inni wneud rhan o genhadaeth drôn ar brosiect i edrych sut ellir defnyddio radar agorfa synthetig fesur y rhisom o dan blanhigion Miscanthus.

Wythnos nesaf, byddwn yn cloddio rhai planhigion ac yn pwyso'r rhisom tanddaearol i ddarparu'r data bydol a fydd, gobeithio, yn ein galluogi i ddatblygu model sy'n cysylltu'r data radar â'r pwysau.

Mae mesur biomas tanddaearol yn gam allweddol a ddylai ein galluogi i wobrwyo ffermwyr am storio carbon yn y dyfodol.

Mae'r gwaith hwn yn cael ei wneud gyda chefnogaeth Hwb ‘Supergen Bioenergy’

🚜 International Archives Day | Research that reshaped the uplands

This Juno plough was used in the 1930s Cahn Hill Improvement Scheme at Pwllpeiran part of Sir George Stapledon’s vision to restore productivity to upland landscapes.

By combining new grass varieties with mechanised land improvement, IBERS researchers dramatically increased pasture productivity – work that later proved crucial during the Second World War.

Today, while drones and remote sensing have replaced caterpillar tractors, the research drivers remain familiar: food security, efficiency and rural sustainability.

🚜 Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Archifau | Ymchwil a ail-luniodd yr ucheldiroedd

Defnyddiwyd yr aradr Juno hwn yn y 1930au ar Gynllun Gwelliant Cahn Hill ym Mhwllpeiran - rhan o weledigaeth Syr George Stapledon i adfer cynhyrchedd yn nhirweddau’r ucheldiroedd.
Drwy gyfuno amrywogaethau glaswellt newydd â gwella’r tir yn beirianyddol, roedd ymchwilwyr IBERS yn codi cynhyrchiant yn enfawr - gwaith a ddaeth yn gymorth hanfodol yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd.

Heddiw, er bod dronau a synhwyro o bell wedi cymryd lle’r tractorau treigl, mae ymchwil yn dal i gael ei hysgogi gan ddiogelu cyflenwadau bwyd, effeithlonrwydd, a chynaliadwyedd cefn gwlad.

🌿 Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Archifol | Planhigion wedi’u gwasgu, eu cadw, a’u hastudio o hyd

Mae casgliadau herbariwm IBERS yn cofnodi degawdau o amrywiaeth planhigion - samplau a gadwyd yn ofalus sy’n parhau i ddylanwadu ar ymchwil heddiw.

Mae’r archifau yn galluogi gwyddonwyr i olrhain newidiadau mewn dosraniad rhywogaethau, nodweddion rhywogaethau ac amgylcheddau dros amser, er mwyn cysylltu gwaith maes y gorffennol â heriau cyfredol fel newid yr hinsawdd a cholli bioamrywiaeth.
