Beyond the Bystander - Most people know the Kitty Genovese case because it inspired research on the bystander effect and more recently that the story was exaggerated at that time by the Police Commissioner of New York and the Press. But examining the murderer of Kitty Genovese raises questions about parole hearings and prisoners expressing remorse and taking responsibility for their actions. This has important consequences for the way we come to understand early release in the UK prison system as the Ministry of Justice grapples with overcrowding. Our latest work examines 17 parole hearings involving her killer, Winston Moseley, and explores a different question: how do we decide whether someone has genuinely changed?

In everyday life, we make these judgements constantly. In parole decisions, the consequences can affect both personal freedom and public safety.

The Psychology department at Aberystwyth University was delighted to co-host *Advancing Neuroscience Across Mid & North Wales* alongside colleagues from Bangor University Imaging Unit and Dda Health Board. For three days, researchers and clinicians came together to explore overlapping research interests and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. One of the highlights was seeing established academics and early-career researchers working side by side during collaborative workshops, generating ideas for new research projects, joint funding applications, and future partnerships.

We are grateful to all delegates, speakers and panel members for creating such an open and supportive atmosphere, and to the organising team, Eva Balgova, Ioana Heidi Mihai, Rachel Rahman, Binney, Koldewyn, Villagra Povina and Akanyeti for their dedication in delivering the event. We also thank Research Wales Innovation Fund through the Aber Collab Scheme and Learned Society of Wales / Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru through its Research Cultures Networks Grant for their support.
