🐶 International Dog Day

For many of us, pets are more than companions. They provide comfort, connection and unconditional affection.

For older victim-survivors of domestic abuse, a beloved pet can be an important source of support. Dewis Choice recognises that pets can also form part of safety planning. An older person may be reluctant to leave an abusive situation if it means being separated from their pet, while animals can sometimes be used as a means of control.

Organisations such as The Cinnamon Trust help older people and their pets stay together by providing practical support when temporary accommodation or additional care is needed.

So when we ask, "What would help you feel safe?" we also need to ask, "What about your pet?"

Because safety is about more than where someone goes. It is about protecting the relationships that give life meaning.

Today, we're celebrating the four-legged companions of the Dewis Choice team and recognising the important role animals can play in the lives of the people we support.

Emergency Alerts are designed to keep us safe. However, for someone experiencing domestic abuse, an alert on a hidden or monitored phone could potentially increase risk.

Technology can be used as part of coercive control, including monitoring phones, checking messages, restricting access and tracking location.

Safety planning needs to consider technology too.
