Today let's discuss the sticky subject of LAYAWAYS!!!
NOT "paying for a custom over time".... that subject has it's own thread.
But, say you see an artist has a completed doll up for sale... let's say they are asking £440.00.
You REALLY want that baby, but don't have all that money right now, so you politely (POLITELY) ask the artist if they'd be willing to take payments over a few weeks or months. (Sometimes they have to say "No" because, hey, they have bills to pay and they can't afford to tie up their inventory for that long. Say, "Ok, thank you very much." and move on.)
Ok, so let's say the artist has agreed to let you pay £110 a month (£27.50 a week - quite affordable). And they ask you to pay a £110 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. And then you will pay a £110 payment on, let's say, the 5th of the month every month for the next three months. You agree.
GREAT!!! You're all excited! Only 3 more payments and your baby will be home!!!
Now, what is happening on the SELLER's side, is that she has agreed to hold that doll somewhere in her home for you. She has agreed to not sell it to anybody else.
She has planned her household budget around the fact that she will be receiving £110 from you on the 5th of the month for the next three months. Great! She is relieved because she knows she will have money to pay her phone bill, or gas bill, or electric bill for the next three months. Yippee!
The next month comes around, and you send the £110! Yay for everybody!
The 3rd payment is due on the 5th again, but on the 1st, you get a flat tire and have to spend the money you were saving for the doll on the tire. What should you do?
A. Pay for the tire and ignore the lady holding the doll, because, hey, you can't get blood from a stone.
B. Borrow money to fix your tire and keep your promise to the seller who is counting on you so she can pay HER bills.
C. Immediately message the seller and see if there is any way you can skip this month's payment and extend your layaway by a month.
D. Tell seller you'll send her the payment next week.
B., C. or D. may be acceptable.
Ignoring the problem is NOT.
Here's what you need to do...
If there is NO WAY you can come up with the payment on time, contact the seller. She MIGHT be able to be flexible. But let's say she is living paycheck to paycheck, just like you and now she is a bit upset. That is TOTALLY REASONABLE.
You can't get mad at HER.
For the sake of argument, let's say there is NO way you can pay this payment this month.
That means that YOU have BREACHED THE CONTRACT you made with the seller, and now she is put in a bad position.
She may say, ok, I will refund the second payment you made, but I am keeping your first payment, which was the NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT you agreed to.
That is totally, morally and legally acceptable. It's what YOU AGREED TO.
Now, you're all sad, because, "Hey! Why can she keep my deposit and I get nothing????????"
Because that is the price you pay for being a grown up and entering into grown up deals!
The seller is now NOT getting your promised payment, which screws her out of her being able to pay her bills, but now she has to come up with that 2nd payment you made so she can refund that - as SHE agreed in her contract.
So now she is £220 short for her bills!
GET IT?????
Now she has to put the doll back up for sale and hope somebody buys it soon so she can pay her bills late!!
I see TOO MANY buyers running to the scammers groups whining that so-and-so kept their (NON-REFUNDABLE) deposit and trying to ruin that artists' reputation.
The artist who did everything right!!
Here's what you should have done.... put as much money as you would have paid to an artist every month into a SAVINGS ACCOUNT, or a coffee can, and once you have a good amount, BUY A DOLL PAID IN FULL! If there were cute dolls online last month, last year...there will be cute dolls online NEXT month or next year.
Then nobody feels cheated.
Ta da!
