Covering all the basics from machine switch on, to your first zip and buttonhole!

Ideal for absolute beginners or those who have had a long break from sewing and need a thorough refresher.

We will look at:

Your Machine, it’s workings and basic maintenance
Threading & Needles + sizes & Changing
Winding & Inserting/changing a bobbin
Tension, stitch length /stitch selection
You will sew stitch samplers and a mini stitch library for future reference
Sample a few types of seam, and when to use them
Master topstitching, understitching and sew at least one pocket
Garment fastenings: Sew buttonholes, elastication & your first zip!

Tea, coffee & biccies provided, but please do bring your own packed lunch

'Get-to-Know' Starter Courses for anyone at any stage:

Whether you've sewn before but not for a while, or want to sew but are slightly daunted by your machine, or you use your machine but want to get to know more of its capabilities.

'Get to know' sessions are quick two-hour intensive classes running through either your your sewing machine or over locker settings, stitches & tensions.
We cover basic maintenance to keep it in tip-top condition and look at needles - types/sizes and replacements.
We will sew a number of seam samples and use some/all (depending how many you have!) of the presser feet that came with your sewing machine, and learn top tips on using your overlocker for more than just edge finishing.

I always keep things fun, and aim to inspire you to sew more - whether that's clothing for you, your partner/ children or grandchildren, or to make sofa covers, cushion covers or curtains - the choice is yours!

You will need your working sewing machine or Overlocker, it's manual (if you have it) presser feet, toolkit and attachments if you have them.
Remember the pedal and lead if they're in two parts! 😉

📍Begins June 10th📍

What we will cover:
*Draft a bodice block from your measurements
*Check & adjust fitting as necessary by drafting an initial pattern, cutting out and making up this basic block, in calico
*Alter the draft where necessary
*Create your Finished Block (Including Sleeves)
*Draft a pattern for a top, using your new Block
*Check the draft and construction methods by creating a toile
*Alter Pattern Draft & re-toile if necessary.
*Create your finished pattern
*Create layplans, choose fabrics and notions
*Layout and cut your garment
*Make up and finishing.

📏 This is a long running Course -
Pattern Cutting is a huge subject which requires concentration and precision. Impossible to fit everything into a day or a couple of days, so after discussion with a couple of interested parties, the course will run as follows:

✏️One Full day Wednesday 10th June 10-3pm to layout the draft Block & Hopefully test the fit
Follow-on sessions 10-1pm on alternate Wednesdays for up to 12 sessions (20+ weeks - plus additional time allowed for holiday 'pauses' EG No session w/c 20th July)
We should be all done by mid October/early November.
With a myriad of blocks available, there could be follow-on courses if there was a demand.

This course will run with MINIMUM TWO, maximum Four attendees

All drafting and pattern tools, paper, card, toiling and threads will be provided at sessions. Machines available for making up, or you may bring your own.
