Comtois horses are quick learners with a free action and a quiet, willing temperament. They have a large head with alert yet gentle eyes and small ears. Their short, straight neck leads to a deep chest and girth and a short, muscular back. The hindquarters on these horses are immensely powerful and their strong loins transfer this power forward through their back and shoulders, allowing them to pull extremely heavy loads. Comtois horses have stocky legs with good joints, clean tendons and a small amount of feathering around the fetlocks. They stand between 14.3hh and 16.1hh. The silver dapple gene is also present amongst black and bay Comtois horses, resulting in a silvery-white mane and tail, and plain bay and black are also seen. Plain chestnut and red roan, however, are not permitted by the breed standard.
Modern day Comtois:
The Comtois is now the most numerous French heavy horse breed, with around 3,000 foals born each year. It is still used as a draft horse, especially for forestry and working in vineyards, but it is also elegant and energetic enough to have found success as a carriage horse. The breeding focus has shifted towards producing lighter horses to meet the growing demand for the Comtois as a pleasure mount and for drawing carriages and sleighs.

Muffin here! Demonstrating just how thick and fluffy their manes can get over the winter and then as they come into Spring, being riden and brushed more their coat will gradually fall out, leaving a much shorter and often shinier coat on them π§£ππ
As I'm sure you will have experienced yourselves, this winter has been particularly wet and cold. However some of our crew have not minded this in the slightest, even to the point of trying to enjoy a roll and getting abit stuck in the mud ......

Bess at her winter home, enjoying the very rare and very sought after sunshine π
Visiting all the horses and ponies on their winter holidays does take some time, so every other week we dedicate a day to going to see a couple of their locations and ensuring they are all safe and sound π
Muffin here is being looked after by close friends and riden once a week to keep his mind and muscles healthy. You can see that he has grown quite a winter coat on him!
Big thanks to all our customers for their support and making what we do so much fun! Thanks again all! π«
π Nearly all of our, quite large, four legged family have gone off to winter homes now. They go off in groups of their friend and/or similar eating needs and are watched by trusted people throughout.
During this time they just relax, a few are fed extra or riden, and all have big delicious green fields, while the land at home rejuvenates and grows again in time for mid-March home time! π
Little powering-down-for-the-winter video for all our amazing followers π

Our handsome stallion Bruno. Looks great in the βοΈ and in the βοΈ of course!
An investigative ride was carried out this week in preparation for a new trail ride to be arranged for next year.
This ride would most likely be carried out two or three times a year towards Talgarth area if you are interested.
There are even more beautiful views to be seen than usual due to being so high ontop of the Brecon Beacons although quite a chilly ride at this time of year and so will probably not be arranged for October again π
Trekking across the top of the / and 1500ft above sea level for a couple of hours in the last bit of sunshine for the year π

Meet the newest member of the Grange team. He is incredibly green and will not be riden by customers for a long time. But he is very kind natured, interested in all things and wants to learn.
Perhaps you'll see him when you visit π§π€
