Eat this to save the world! The most sustainable foods – from seaweed to venison 30/06/2021

A misleading headline, but a good read.

Here are some key takeaways, which we have also encountered from our work in the food and drink sector. Although they might seem obvious, they are still worth repeating:
- It is almost always not what we eat but the process and journey food takes that determines its impact
- Consider seasonality - You can't always eat what you want, when you want
- More fruit, veg and pulses grown in the UK, to feed the UK
- Short supply chains
- More seaweed!
- It's complicated. No silver bullets, no single solution. Take the time to think, read, and listen

Any other key takeaways or thoughts?

You can read about some of our recent projects in the food sector here -

Rural Wales - Evidence Base Research - Miller Research UK 27/05/2021

What does the future hold for rural Wales?

Whatever the answer, any future action, strategy, and support offered must be based on a solid evidence base.

We've been working with the Welsh Government at this critical juncture for Wales, as it transitions away from The European Rural Development Programme, funding and framework, towards alternative, post-Brexit arrangements.

We have not only evaluated key services in rural development but also identified gaps in current understanding and research, to help inform future projects and research.

We have even more new faces joining us as Graduate Analysts and are delighted to welcome Sophie Wheeler and Jessica Mann to Miller Research.

It's a busy time for us, so both are already in the thick of a number of our ongoing research, evaluation and consultancy projects.

Both have written interesting and thoughtful 'Starting at Miller' blog posts outlining their backgrounds, interests and hopes for work at Miller Research. Follow the links below for a read.

What is agroforestry?
A nice explainer and set of case studies of how tree planting can be incorporated into food production.

Agroforestry and other agroecology must be a big part of the UK's agricultural future. They closely align with the Agriculture Bill's aim that,
'farmers and land managers who provide the greatest environmental benefits will secure the largest rewards’.

But can agroecology effectively address the dilemma of producing adequate quantities of food whilst protecting biodiversity and natural resources, while also mitigating climate change? The Ten Years for Agroecology in Europe project, led by top scientific experts, suggests it is absolutely doable at scale.

The implications on a global scale are also enormous, according to the fantastic website and resource -

Covid-19: Carers 'worn out' by virus and need services back 01/11/2020

Public consultation on Coronavirus Act 2020 and social care in Wales.

"Before the pandemic anyone requiring care, and carers themselves, had the legal right to have their needs assessed by local authorities.

Those rights were suspended when the first lockdown was imposed in Wales.

The consultation asks whether that measure continues, or is suspended. It closes on Monday."

You can reply to the consultation here -

Covid: Burn-out fears of 'exhausted' unpaid carers 20/10/2020

Thousands of people in the UK are providing an essential, unpaid service, which has only become more difficult and stressful during the Pandemic. Good to see their voice being heard through the UK Carers survey. Hopefully, it can lead to an increase in care for the carers themselves.

Farming 'vital as Welsh language stronghold' 07/10/2020

There's a lot more to Wales' future in farming than you might think, including the persistence of the Welsh language. "Family farms are a significant part of Welsh society and culture - they need to be protected.” Farming Connect’s Iaith y Pridd/Language of the Land report.

We are currently conducting several evaluations exploring rural development in areas where farming influences the landscape and culture, as well as the economy. It is increasingly clear that all aspects of rural development must be considered when making decisions about the future of farming.

Trees give life. It’s hard to overstate their benefits. Trees provide wildlife habitat, food, better air and water quality, medicine, shade, sustainable timber, natural flood management and healthier soils. Most importantly in today’s urgent debate about climate change, trees also sequester carbon dioxide. "
