CULTER GAMES RETROSPECTIVE (Aberdeen Journal July 1922)
The occurrence of Culter Games on Saturday last has suggested some thoughts and notes of a retrospective kind, which may be of some interest, as showing from what small beginnings the big institution has grown. The games had their origin in 1866, under the auspices of a Farm Servants’ Society, and the writer of this was present at, and has before him now reports and prize-lists of the four following meetings 1867-1870. For a number of years the Games were held on the Glebe Haugh, beside the river Dee, and near to St Peter’s Well. This Haugh was large enough for the purpose in those early years, but ere long the meetings outgrew the accommodation of the Haugh, and other meeting places had to be found. As regards the meeting in 1867 the report states that “the day was very fine, and the turnout much better than last year – about 250 being present, including a good many ladies.” An attendance of 250 would seem a mere family party compared with the crowd of several thousands that attended in later years.

Thanks goes to all the stall holders, those who donated raffle prizes, the volunteers who help set up on Gala Day, sponsors and the groups who entertained us in the ring.

The Gala Team are off for a well earned rest after months of planning.
