I WANT TO QUIT
At some point in martial arts training, almost every child will say: “I want to quit.”
Usually this doesn’t mean they truly want to stop. It means they have reached the point where something has become difficult either mentally or physically.
Martial arts is designed this way. Progress through the belt system takes time, focus, patience, and effort. Unlike many modern activities that provide quick rewards, martial arts teaches children how to work toward something meaningful over time.
When children push through those difficult moments, they learn some of the most important lessons training offers: perseverance, resilience, discipline, and confidence.
Our aim is not only to teach self-defence. We aim to help young people develop strong character, respect for others, belief in their own abilities and to dig deep and do their best.
Sooyang Do is a modern defensive martial art, but we hold firmly to traditional values. Students wear their uniform with pride, show respect to their instructors and training partners, and address each other properly. These traditions help shape mindset and character.
The children who benefit the most from martial arts are often not the most naturally talented, they are the ones who simply keep showing up.
Thank you for supporting your child through the challenging stages and remembering why they started the journey. Those moments are often where the greatest growth happens.

CHARITY RAFFLE 2025
Last year we held a charity event with my students in which donations were made to MHA (which is now unfortunately closed) & Grampian disability sport. It didn’t feel right not doing something for charity this year.. therefore we have made the decision to do a Charity raffle in which the whole of SYD will be involved.
CLAN has been close to SYD in many ways for a long time, and has been close to us again this year. For years we held a ‘focusmittathon’ in which we did Martial Arts for hours on end to raise money for CLAN. This is going to make a return in 2026!
Majority of profits from this raffle will be going to CLAN, and we will be making another donation to a different charity, which we will choose in due course.
The raffle will be all SYD items (I have put a list below of potential prizes). The Raffle will be drawn near the end of January 2026.
The raffles will be *£5 a strip or 5 strips for £20.*
*Potential prizes below*

GRADING DECEMBER 2025
What a great end to the year for our Cove team at Westdyke! 🥋
From our newest students showing huge potential for the future, to our senior students delivering a great performance whilst continuing their journey, everyone of them earned those new belts 👊
A very special congratulations goes to Mr Fairley, who achieved Bo Dan (Black Belt) level. While many great students over the years have reached this milestone within my classes, Mr Fairley is the very first to progress all the way from white belt to black belt entirely within the Cove school. An exceptional achievement and a moment of real pride for his family and us all 👏
Thank you once again to all families for your ongoing support, it continues to make such a difference to me personally but more importantly, the development of our young students.
2025 has been a successful year for our art and the Cove class in particular, here’s to even more in 2026!
