The theme of the tournament is Jam in the Archives. Teams will design games inspired by a curated set of historical artefacts housed in each institution’s own archive collections.

The University of Aberdeen and Abertay University will each host a parallel Game Jam. Winners from each Jam will advance to the Final Jam at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Important Dates and Locations
The University of Aberdeen Jam is on 11–12 (Thurs–Fri) June 2026, start time 10am.
Event Address: University Collections, Sir Duncan Rice Library, Bedford Rd, Aberdeen AB24 3AA

Note: Lunch and snacks will be provided at all the jams. In addition, travel and hotel stay will be covered for the participants of the Final Jam at the NLS.

Please register here by 1 June 2026. If you already have a team, you can list the name of your team members in the form. If you do not have a team, we will be happy to add you to a team.

Rules
Team size 1–4
Games should be aligned with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion principles of the three institutions. See here, here, and here.
Games developed prior to the start of the competition should not be entered in the competition.
Generative AI is allowed but participants should be clear where it has been used and include a brief Steam-style AI disclosure statement. The judges will give preference to work that is human-generated, rather than AI-generated.
No work developed in this Game Jam may be used for any part of coursework such as honours projects etc.

Come along to this academic year’s final session of the History Through Games workshop!

Here, we‘ll be discussing huge-scale multiplayer games or events and how these reveal popular understandings of history as well as the player-made historiographies they have produced. Our key case study of interest will be the recently popular Minecraft ‘Civilisation’ genre in addition to Foxhole.
Come along if you find the time, and we look forward to discussing with you!

The key optional reading for those that have the time is doubtlessly Ish’s ‘Civilisation’ video, which at the point of writing has been viewed 43 million times.

Take note that the first 3 min will prove perfectly sufficient in providing basic context for our session.
