National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher Maths exams are taking place this week, followed by National 5 Apps next week.
By now, most students have put in the hard work. The focus in these final days should be on staying calm, thinking clearly, and giving themselves the best chance to show what they know.
As an experienced maths teacher, tutor, and SQA exam marker, I’ll soon be looking at these papers from the other side as well. So my advice to students at this stage is simple and practical:
* Check the basics — calculator, pens, timings, and formulae
* Show your working clearly — this is where many marks are earned
* Read each question carefully before starting, and read it again after you have finished to ensure that you haven’t missed anything
* If a question feels difficult, move on and come back to it
* Remember: method marks can make a real difference, so try as many questions as you can
To every student sitting exams this week and next week — I wish you the very best. Go in prepared, take your time, and trust the effort you’ve put in.

Merry Christmas to all my students and their families! I hope you are all enjoying a very well-deserved break.
I know that with prelims fast approaching in the New Year, it can be hard to fully switch off. You might be feeling the pressure or thinking about those revision lists, but please remember:
Taking a break is just as important as the study itself.
Use this time to recharge, enjoy being with your families, and eat plenty of festive treats! A rested mind is much sharper when it comes to tackling those equations in January.
Enjoy the magic of the season, and I’ll see you all soon! ✨

Tomorrow’s a big day across Scotland as young people receive their SQA exam results, and I want to take a moment to recognise the parents and carers too.
As a maths teacher and tutor, I know how much support, encouragement, and sometimes late-night reassurance goes on behind the scenes. Whether it’s National 5s, Highers, or Advanced Highers, the effort is truly a team effort.
Whatever the outcome tomorrow, please know that a grade does not define a child’s worth or potential. There are always options, opportunities, and a way forward. Your support makes all the difference.
Sending strength, calm, and best wishes to every family a waiting results. You’ve done an amazing job. 💫

📢 Coming Soon: A New Way to Thrive in National 5 Maths!
Every year around this time, my inbox fills up with messages from parents and students looking for help with National 5 maths. And every year, I have to say the same thing: I’m fully booked for one-to-one tuition.
I know how stressful this time of year can be. The exams are getting closer, prelim results might have left your child’s confidence shaky, and you want to make sure you get the best help possible before it’s too late.
A few months ago, I started thinking—what if I could still help, even when I don’t have space for one-to-one lessons? What if I could provide the same structured support, exam-focused explanations, and step-by-step guidance in a way that’s accessible to more students?
So, I’ve been working hard on something new. It’s called N5 Thrive, and it’s launching soon.
This is a brand-new way to get structured, expert-led maths tuition without needing weekly one-to-one sessions and at a fraction of the cost of one-to-one sessions.
If you want to be the first to know when N5 Thrive goes live, drop a comment below or send me a message!

Have you ever tried to teach your child to drive? 🚗💥
How did it go? Did it lead to tension-filled moments, maybe even some shouting? Teaching a loved one can be tough, no matter how patient you are. I had some big fallouts with my dad when he tried to teach me to drive—despite him being one of the kindest and most patient people I know! After a few frustrating lessons, we both agreed it would be better for me to learn from a professional instructor. With their guidance, I made quick progress, and the stress between my dad and me melted away.
Why does this happen?
The ability to do something well doesn’t always translate into being able to teach it. Knowing and teaching are two entirely different skills. 🧠✏️
The same is true for maths.
As a teacher and tutor, I often hear parents say things like, “I’m an engineer and good at maths, but whenever I try to help my child, we end up arguing. I just can’t seem to explain it in a way they understand.”
This is where hiring a tutor who is also a trained teacher makes a real difference. We not only have a deep understanding of maths, but we also know how to teach it in ways that students can grasp. If a child doesn’t understand a concept right away, a teacher will have multiple methods to explain it until it clicks.
Having the best maths skills in the world means little if you can’t convey that knowledge to someone else. There’s no substitute for teaching maths to 30 children, 20 to 25 times a week—it builds the adaptability and experience that only regular teaching can provide. 📚👨👩👧👦
If your child is struggling with maths, I currently have a handful of spaces left for one-to-one tutoring. It could be the best investment you ever make in your child’s education. 🎯

The first session is half-price, so it’s just £25 to get started. ✨

Back in 2012, when I was a nervous young student teacher, I was fortunate enough to do my placement at Boclair Academy in Glasgow, one of the best schools in Scotland. It was an incredible experience that shaped the way I teach today.
One standout teaching method I observed was the power of small group learning—a strategy that delivered fantastic results for students preparing for their prelims.
By focusing on specific key concepts, exam techniques, and clearing up common misconceptions, students gained a deeper understanding of the material—something that's hard to achieve when rushing through topics.
💡 My biggest takeaway? For students aiming for top grades (A or B), it’s vital to not just know the material but truly understand it and be able to apply it to a wide range of problems.
Now, with over a decade of teaching under my belt, I still use this principle in my own practice. In my small group sessions, I focus on individual topics, connecting concepts so students see the bigger picture. This method helps students build strong foundations, and more importantly, gain the confidence they need to excel in their exams.
💬 What’s next?
🎯 I’m excited to announce that after the October holidays, I’ll be launching small group sessions for National 5 and Higher Maths. If you are looking for a cost-effective, focused, and flexible approach to exam prep, these sessions could be exactly what your child needs to thrive!

One of the biggest challenges I see in the classroom is making sure students can grasp new concepts while still remembering everything they’ve learned before the summer holidays—and even from previous years! I regularly go over key topics and give feedback to help them keep up and strengthen their understanding.
As a tutor, I bring the same personalised approach to one-on-one sessions. You probably remember from your own school days that learning new maths concepts can be tough, especially if you feel that you've not got to grips with ones already covered. To truly succeed, students need to connect what they’re learning now with everything they’ve been taught before.
In my tutoring sessions, I tailor each lesson to the individual, identifying gaps in their knowledge and working on their strengths and weaknesses. By chatting with your child and asking the right questions, I make sure we focus on exactly what they need.
If you’re looking for that kind of personalised support to give your child the best shot at success, drop me a message! Let’s help them feel confident and prepared.
