Over the past month, OPITO’s Asia Pacific team has undertaken a series of strategic engagements across China and Sabah, Malaysia, bringing together industry stakeholders, operators, academic institutions, and training partners to support workforce development across the region's evolving energy landscape. 🌏

Led by Ooi SuanHoe, SVP Strategic Partnerships Asia Pacific, the engagements focused on strengthening relationships, exchanging industry insights, and exploring opportunities for collaboration across both traditional and renewable energy sectors. A key highlight of the China visit was an offshore wind industry forum co-hosted by OPITO and Fujian Yunwei, which brought together operators, contractors, and industry stakeholders from across Fujian Province to discuss workforce competency, safety, and training needs within the growing offshore wind sector.

During the forum, Lucie Maihoub, Product Development Manager, shared insights into OPITO's wind power strategy, highlighting the transferability of safety and competency frameworks between energy sectors, the value of globally recognised training standards, and the importance of supporting workforce mobility through consistent approaches to safety and skills development.

The engagements reinforced OPITO's presence across China and Sabah, strengthening relationships with existing partners while increasing awareness of OPITO's role in workforce competency and safety worldwide. Discussions with stakeholders, including Goldwind, Xiamen Science University, and CNOOC International, identified opportunities to support workforce development across offshore wind, traditional energy, and emergency response capabilities, further reinforcing OPITO's position as a trusted global partner in workforce safety, skills and competency development.

June was a month of global collaboration for the team, from industry forums and international conferences to supporting STEM initiatives and investing in future talent.

A recent visit by the OPITO team to Perth, Western Australia, reinforced just how central workforce capability has become to the future of the global energy industry.

Across discussions with regulators, employers, industry bodies, training providers and workforce specialists, a consistent theme emerged: the challenge is developing a workforce that can adapt, transfer skills across sectors and technologies, and remain competent in an increasingly complex energy landscape.

Whether discussing offshore operations, emerging energy industries, or long-term workforce planning, many of the themes were strikingly familiar. Meeting future industry demand, attracting, and retaining talent, addressing regional workforce constraints, and improving labour market intelligence are challenges shared by energy-producing regions around the world.

The visit highlighted the value of bringing together industry, government, regulators, and education providers to share perspectives and identify practical solutions. It also provided an opportunity for OPITO to share insights from our work across global energy markets, including workforce planning, competence management, and workforce mobility through periods of industrial and technological change.

While technologies and policy priorities may differ from region to region, the workforce challenges remain consistent. The conversations reinforced the importance of collaboration, workforce intelligence and knowledge sharing in supporting safe, competent, and future-ready workforces.
