What a six weeks it has been since reopening! We should really be more active on social media in this day and age. All CN coaches are now @pre_script level 1 coaches after completing this qualification over the last four months. We pride ourselves on continually levelling up our knowledge and skill sets as trainers to provide the best possible personal training experience and results for our clients.

Far too often personal trainers will do one simple course to become qualified and then that is it for their whole career. Don’t get me wrong qualifications aren’t everything, however I firmly believe that as a coach you owe it to your clients to continually invest in further improving your skill set and knowledge which will in turn help them.

This course was all about developing mobility, stability and strength across the body as a whole. A very balanced course that emphasised the importance of having a structurally sound postural base open which to then develope strength and performance. Regardless of what your goal, weather it is being able to lift your grandkids or squat 300kg, having sufficient mobility, stability and strength throughout your body is going to lead to positive outcomes. #cnfitness #personaltrainer #personaltraineraberdeen

One year ago we went into full lockdown and things changed big time! What a crazy year it has been! Many lessons learned, perspectives gained and mental resilience further strengthened.

A huge thanks to all of our clients who have stood by us and worked with us online while we have been closed for a total of eight months now, nine by the time we open on the 26th April. It’s no exaggeration to say that without your continued support while being closed, CN fitness would likely not be reopening, so it means the world to us.

Working online so much for the last year has reaffirmed why we only work 1-1 in person at CN. Nothing beats 1-1 in personal personal training, tailored to you, in a private gym filled with the worlds best equipment. Online is the best we have just now but as soon as the 26th April rolls round I will have a celebratory ceremony while uninstalling zoom from my computer, that’s for sure.

When we got to reopen for four months last year the energy and positivity in CN was the best it has ever been. We made a huge effort to provide a relaxed, easy going environment for our clients to work in, and it will be the same again this time round. We cannot wait.

Previous 1rm of 210kg flying up feeling like a rpe 8. Training has been going well during lockdown and feeling the strongest I ever have.

I am looking forward to having clients in the gym and getting a bit of a buzz back into the place though. Nothing beats a good gym atmosphere with people all working hard to achieve their goals. Not long left now.

Every year we make a point at CN of taking all our team away for educational courses and have travelled all over the UK, to Spain, Sweden and even as far as Australia to learn from the best coaches in the industry. While this is of course off the table just now we are currently working our way through the next best thing. All CN coaches are current enrolled on the 16 week online @pre_script course ran by @the_muscle_doc. Learning on a zoom call doesn’t quite compare to getting a trip away to an epic gym in another country but is the best we can do just now. Even though we are closed we are always levelling up and we cannot wait to open again to help all of our current and new clients.

Monday morning and a new week ahead. One of the most important things you can do just now in my opinion for overall mental and physical wellbeing is ensure you have some sort of routine amidst the lockdown madness. It’s very easy just now to feel like you are just floating from one day to the next without any real structure or plan because the usual things we do as part of our routine are not there and out of our control. In the words of the Greek philosopher Aristotle ‘Through disciple comes freedom'.

Freedom from what is based upon the actions taken and the individual person but it could be freedom from poor health, freedom from anxiety and stress, freedom from lack of self confidence etc etc.

For me the disciple of having a structured routine leads to freedom from stress and anxiety, freedom from procrastination, freedom from poor energy levels and a whole load more.

My three non negotiables for having a good routine are.

1: Wake up and go to bed at the same time each day and don’t hit snooze in the morning. Alarm goes off, get up.

2: Maximum of 60 minutes social media per day. This may seem easy but check the screen time app on your phone and you will almost definitely be shocked at the amount of time social media steals from you.

3: Exercise. Having a well structured week of training that is going to help me reach my goals, improve my health and challenge me on a regular basis.

Have a think about what three things you could input into your daily routine that will developed discipline and bring you closer to your goals.

Merry Christmas from all of the team here at CN Fitness!

What a year it has been! I cannot thank our past and present clients enough for their support and trust in us throughout the year. To all of our clients who worked online with us while we were closed and to all of the clients we have welcomed through our doors over the past four months since reopening, we could not appreciate it more.

We will be closing now until (hopefully) the 16th January. If you are currently on our waiting list to get started, we will aim to get you started as soon as possible once we reopen. Thank you for your patience in waiting for a slot! If you are interested in working with us once we do reopen, get in touch now as we will be fully booked very quickly upon reopening. The past four months since reopening have been our busiest ever and I am hopeful that when we do reopen, whenever that may be, that that trend continues. Every person that comes through our doors is supporting a small, independent business and makes a huge difference to our ability to weather the storm that Covid-19 is proving to be.

Locking up the gym today I felt real sadness in knowing that it may be a while until we can reopen our doors to get the usual buzz back into the place. Seeing people working hard to improve their health and fitness, seeing people smiling and hearing people laughing. Helping people forget about all the problems in the world for the hour they are with us. For now its back to the online training and when the time comes to reopen our doors, we will be ready to welcome you all again!

Absolutely great effort from Greg on these safety bar squats. Greg has been working with us for 8 weeks now and up until then he had never set foot in a gym.
In his initial movement assessment we didn’t quite have the mobility or stability to squat with load in an safe or effective way.

We have worked up through some machine based exercise to develop some baseline strength, along with some mobility and core strengthening exercises, then we started doing some goblet squats, now we are onto safety bar squats, which as you can see, are looking good.

Here is Aimee demonstrating some solid bb back squats, 85kg, 3 x 6 @ rpe 7. This is week 1 of a 6 week progression building up to heavy singles of 110kg.

Squats are such a great exercise but are all too often performed incorrectly. Below are a few points to help you get the most out of barbell squats.

Warm up:
Spend some time doing a dynamic warm up focusing on the hips, knees, ankles, shoulders and spine, especially if you are going to the gym after a day of sitting a at a desk. Don’t just walk into the gym, stick a bar on your back, and expect to be able to squat with good technique, most people will need some warming up to establish good technique.

Feet:
Feet should be roughly hip width apart with feet slightly rotated out. There is no set rule as everyones biomechanics are different but around hip width and slightly rotated is best for most, adjust as need to make it comfortable for you.

Torque:
As you begin to squat, and throughout the movement, apply external rotation force throughout the feet which is coming from the hips. Imagine you are standing on an open piece of news paper and you are trying to split it down the middle. This external rotation force will help foot stability , improving active range of motion and increase posterior chain recruitment

Hands:
There are endless ways to rest the bar on your back and variations on how to hold it. Just ensure that it is in a comfortable and secure place and keep your hands closed and wrists as still as possible. The bar should not roll up and down in your grip as you squat. This leads to a whole host of problems that can mess with your technique.

Breath:
Breath into your diaphragm at the start of each rep to increase intra abdominal pressure which will help maintain a neutral spine throughout the lift. Think about trying to breath into your belly, pushing your belly out with the breath, then locking the breath there as if you were bracing for someone to punch you, as you descend into the squat. #cnfitness #squats #personaltrainer #aberdeen

[11/06/20]   A common mistake you see people make when going through a fat loss phase in their training is completely changing their training programmes to start incorporating high rep sets, low rest periods and a very high training volume. The calorie expenditure of the actual training sessions will be very slightly higher but at the cost of potentially losing muscle and strength. A better approach is to focus on maintaining strength in your training through heavy compound lifts and letting your calorie intake and daily activity levels outside of the gym do the fat loss work.
I am currently 4 weeks and 6 kg down into a little tidy-up of the old body fat and working hard to hold onto my strength as much as possible. All I am doing is eating a little less food, that’s it, everything else stays the same. #cnfitness #aberdeen #personaltraining #personaltrainer
