Film & Visual Culture Abdn Our curriculum emphasizes comparative thinking and theoretical reflection, as well as an integrated approach to creative practice. in Film and Visual Culture.

We introduce students to the canon and its counter-parts, traditions of thought and new movements in the discipline. Our aim is to train students to become active participants in their own visual culture, as careful scholars and creative practitioners. Film and Visual Culture students learn to think within the movements of cinema and to pursue questions beyond the film frame. At the undergraduate level, we offer Single and Joint Honours degrees. At the post-graduate level, we offer a taught Master’s degree in Visual Culture and a Ph.D. Film and Visual Culture is based in the School of Language and Literature and we maintain close ties with The Centre for Modern Thought. These disciplinary connections invite cross-disciplinary thought, conversation, and research. The University of Aberdeen is an ancient institution of higher education, founded in 1495 on the shores of Northeast Scotland. Here, students have access to world-class research facilities and a visual culture of mountains and sea. We invite you to learn more about our Discipline. It was a joy meeting our new undergraduate students today in the Welcome Week induction for Film & Visual Culture! Undergraduate Programme Coordinator Dr Calum Waddell gave an overview of the FVC degree and hosted a ‘Guess the Film from the Still’ quiz – many congratulations to the two winners! The MLitt Film, Visual Culture and Arts Management induction, led by the Postgraduate Programme Coordinator Alan Macpherson, also took place today. A very warm welcome to all our new students and a warm welcome back to our returning students – we can’t wait to see you in our classes next week! Dr Calum Waddell has contributed new writing to the Australian 4k release of Ringo Lam's legendary and influential Hong Kong action classic "Full Contact" - starring the great Chow Yun Fat. It is fantastic to see Waddell's research in Hong Kong genre cinema being utilised and those taking our second year "Visualising Revolution" course next year will have a chance to engage with this topic too!
