Hello all, we just wanted to say a big, massive thank you to Stephanie Garrison, the research fellow on the 'Lands of the Imagination' project as part of SPOT, for giving us her insight and talking about her research about media tourism in Scotland. Thank you to Professor Claire Wallace as well for participating! Finally, a MASSIVE thank you to all who managed to attend the talk and we hope you enjoyed it :)
For those who didn't manage to make it but are still interested, we have written a short summary:
Stephanie Garrison talked about her research with the SPOT team looking at consildating the definitions of tourism using the term Media Tourism looking at three different Scottish case studies: Doune Castle, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Abbotsford House. She highlighted that these places encapsulated different types of tourism from franchise tourism and literary tourism, along with the importance of social media which had been neglected from previous studies. She also talked about the effects of Covid-19 on her work limiting interviews and visiting the sites. The power of fan bases were also mentioned as an important tool in developing tourist sights and fascination with Scotland. It was expressed that many tourists who come to Scotland have their view of the country painted by films, tv shows etc. and a lot of Scottish media often makes Scotland seem magical and romantic. The tourism industry has been hit hard during COVID-19 and almost everything has been put on a digital platform. It was said that with the limited amount of people in these sites, the tours almost felt private.
If you have any questions about the presentation or want to find out more about the research with SPOT, you can contact:
