"Popiół i diament" – pokaz filmu Andrzeja Wajdy towarzyszący wystawie "Frontem ku Mapie: Śladem przestrzennej historii Polskich Sił Zbrojnych w Szkocji" w Aberdeen.
W setną rocznicę urodzin Andrzeja Wajdy, w roku jego imienia, zapraszamy na pokaz jednego z najważniejszych filmów w historii kina europejskiego "Popiół i diament".
Akcja filmu rozgrywa się w ostatnim dniu II wojny światowej. Maciek, młody żołnierz polskiego podziemia, otrzymuje rozkaz zabicia komunistycznego działacza. W chwili, gdy kończy się wojna z Niemcami, rozpoczyna się nowy konflikt – polityczny, moralny i osobisty. Elektryzująca rola Zbigniewa Cybulskiego uczyniła film ikoną światowego kina, a Wajda stworzył przejmujący portret Polski stojącej między tragiczną przeszłością a niepewną przyszłością.
Ten moment historycznego przełomu łączy film Wajdy z wystawą "Frontem ku Mapie". Dla wielu polskich żołnierzy rok 1945 nie oznaczał prostego powrotu do pokoju. Ci, którzy walczyli u boku zachodnich aliantów – w tym żołnierze związani w czasie wojny ze Szkocją – musieli zdecydować, czy wracać do Polski znajdującej się pod władzą komunistyczną, czy pozostać na emigracji. Dla członków podziemia w Polsce pytanie brzmiało inaczej: czy wraz z końcem okupacji niemieckiej kończy się również ich walka?
Organizowany przez Polish Film Club Borscht pokaz filmu "Popiół i Diament" towarzyszy otwarciu wystawy "Frontem ku Mapie: Śladem przestrzennej historii Polskich Sił Zbrojnych w Szkocji", przygotowanej przez Sól Association we współpracy z Aberdeen City Libraries, przy wsparciu Konsulatu Generalnego RP w Edynburgu.
Wystawa opowiada historię polskich żołnierzy w Szkocji poprzez miejsca, mapy i ślady pozostawione w szkockim krajobrazie. W jej centrum znajduje się Wielka Polska Mapa Szkocji w Eddleston – niezwykły pomnik polskiej obecności w Szkocji i trwały symbol polsko-szkockich więzi.
Wystawa prezentowana jest w języku polskim i angielskim.

Ashes and Diamonds (Popiół i diament) – a screening of Andrzej Wajda’s film in Aberdeen accompanying the exhibition "Fronting the Map".
On the centenary of Andrzej Wajda’s birth, in a year officially celebrated in Poland as the Year of Andrzej Wajda, we invite you to a screening of one of the most important works in European cinema – "Ashes and Diamonds" (Popiół i diament).
Set on the final day of the Second World War, the film follows Maciek, a young Polish underground fighter ordered to assassinate a Communist official. As the war against Germany ends, another conflict begins – political, moral and personal. Zbigniew Cybulski’s electrifying performance made the film a landmark of world cinema, while Wajda
created a powerful portrait of Poland caught between a tragic past and an uncertain future.
This moment of historical transition connects Wajda’s film with the "Fronting the Map" exhibition. For many Polish servicemen, 1945 did not bring a straightforward return to peace. Those who had fought alongside the Western Allies – including servicemen whose wartime lives were connected with Scotland – had to decide whether to return to a Poland under Communist rule or remain abroad. For members of the underground in Poland, the question was different: did the end of German occupation mean that their fight was over?
Organised by Polish Film Club Borscht, the screening accompanies the opening of "Fronting the Map: Tracing the Spatial History of the Polish Armed Forces in Scotland", an exhibition prepared by Sól Association in collaboration with Aberdeen City Libraries and with the support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh.
The exhibition tells the story of Polish soldiers in Scotland through the places, maps and traces they left in the Scottish landscape. At its centre is the Great Polish Map of Scotland in Eddleston – an extraordinary monument to the Polish wartime presence in Scotland and an enduring symbol of Polish-Scottish ties.
The exhibition is presented in English and Polish.

The film will be shown in Polish with English subtitles. The screening will be preceded by a pre-recorded introduction by the director and film scholar, Kuba Mikurda.
