⭐️Our artist of the week is famed actress & singer Olivia Newton-John!💫

🇦🇺Born in Cambridge, England in September 1948 but raised in Melbourne, Australia from 1954 - Olivia returned to England in the ‘60’s as a teen to pursue a career in music, after winning a singing talent contest on popular show ‘Sing Sing Sing’. After touring as a duo act with her friend Pat Carroll around army bases and clubs around the UK & Europe, Olivia recorded her first single for Decca Records in 1966; her US debut album came in 1972, producing her first top ten hit & Grammy award

📀Olivia sold over 100 million albums in her career spanning over 50 years, with numerous awards from Grammy to People’s Choice to American Music and several other honours. Her single ‘Physical’ stayed at the top of the charts for 10 consecutive weeks, making it the No.1 single of the ‘80’s; in 2010 Billboard Magazine listed it as No.8 of their ‘Top 100 Songs Of All Time’

🕺Olivia shot to superstardom after starring as Sandy in the movie musical Grease, she received a Golden Globe nomination and it remains the most successful movie musical in history

🎖️Olivia was awarded an OBE in 1979 for her humanitarian efforts and kept charity work ongoing until her death in 2022, particularly charities centred around cancer as a survivor herself; the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre (ONJCWC) was built on the Austin Campus in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia in 2013

⭐️This week our students have been listening to a variety of tunes from John, including hits like ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’, ‘You’re The One That I Want’ & ‘Summer Nights’ from the Grease soundtrack, and original tunes like ‘Physical’, ‘Xanadu’, ‘If You Love Me (Let Me Know)’ and many more!🎙️🎶 With smooth transition from country-pop to soft rock, John became one of the most successful vocalists of the ‘70’s and stayed at the top of the charts until the mid ‘80’s🪩🎵

⭐️ARTIST OF THE WEEK⭐️ ~ NILE RODGERS⭐️

⭐️Our artist of the week is industry giant Nile Rodgers!🎸

🗽Born in New York City, September 1952, Nile Rodgers Jr. had a fairly rocky upbringing however got the chance to spend time with some jazz greats including Thelonious Monk; Rodgers learned the flute & clarinet as a teen but soon found home with the guitar at age 16. By 19, Rodgers was working at the Sesame Street stage show and playing nightly in the house band at the Apollo Theatre, performing with legends like Aretha Franklin & Ben E. King

🎫In 1970 Rodgers & bassist Bernard Edwards formed The Big Apple Band, working as a backing musicians for vocal group New York City who had one hit, allowing them to tour extensively before disbanding in ‘75. In ‘77 Rodgers & Edwards changed the band’s name to Chic and began creating their signature sound, a blend of soul, jazz & funk; they released their first single with Luther Vandross in 1977 - an instant hit with a subsequent album deal with Atlantic Records, the beginning of an extremely successful string of records and collaborations

🪩With the 1979 disco backlash trend in full swing, Edwards retreated from music while Rodgers turned his attention to other collaborations; Rodgers produced for some of the biggest artists of the ‘80’s including David Bowie, Diana Ross, Madonna & Debby Harry to name a few, while releasing his debut solo album in ‘83

⭐️Our artist of the week is rock ‘n’ roll legend Big Mama Thornton!🎙️

🇺🇸Willie Mae Thornton was born December 1926 in Alabama, USA; as her father was a minister and her mother sang in the church choir, Willie Mae grew up singing in church, later learning drums and harmonica. As a teen Willie Mae got a job cleaning a local saloon and soon began substituting for the regular singer, where she got the attention of music promoter Sammy Green and joined his Georgia based show, The Hot Harlem Review, from 1941-1948

🎼Now settled in Houston, Thornton was heavily contributing to the development of the ‘Texas Blues’ style, signing with producer Don Robey at Peacock Records, later known for its important influence on soul & rock music; Thornton spent much of the early ‘50’s on the road touring and recording. In 1952 Thornton travelled to NYC to play the Apollo Theatre as an opening act, but was soon promoted to the headliner, this would be where she first earned the nickname ‘Big Mama’

💽Thornton earned her first R&B charts topper with ‘Hound Dog’, released nationwide in ‘53, despite its sale of two million copies Thornton received only $500. In ‘65 Thornton toured Europe with the American Folk Blues Festival, an unusual honour for a female artist; throughout her career she worked with many blues greats, including Buddy Guy, B.B. King & Muddy Waters

⭐️This week our students have been listening to a variety of tunes from Thornton, including classics like ‘Hound Dog’, ‘Ball N’ Chain’, ‘Sweet Little Angel’, ‘I’m Feeling Alright -1’, ‘They Call Me Big Mama’, ‘Watermelon Man’ and many more!🎶🎤 In her influential career spanning over 40 years, Thornton composed over 20 blues songs that are now considered classics in the genre, some made more popular by later artists like Janis Joplin and Elvis Presley. Thornton was posthumously inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in ‘84 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2020🎵🏅

⭐️Our artist of the week is viral success Sienna Spiro!🎙️

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿Spiro was born in September, 2005 in London, England and began writing songs at the early age of 10, attending East London Arts & Music school before dropping out at the age of 16 to pursue a career in music full time. In 2021, Spiro began posting videos of herself singing covers and original music on TikTok, eventually building up a following of 3.5 million; she released her debut single in May, 2024

🎵It was Spiro’s second single ‘MAYBE.’ released August 2024, that earned her first entry into the UK Official Singles Chart, peaking at No.45, later that month she performed at her first festival - All Points East at Victoria Park in London. After the release of her fourth single that November, she was billed a “musician to watch” in 2025 by Dazed online magazine

🎫Spiro embarked on her first UK tour in September 2025, followed by the release of breakthrough single ‘Die On This Hill’ reaching No.9 on the UK Singles Chart, which became viral on social media, many fans taking to platforms to cover the song. This led to Spiro signing a global contract with Sony Music, and a nomination for Critics Choice at the 2026 Brit Awards. Just last week, on 8th May Spiro performed at the Royal Albert Hall in celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday

⭐️Our artist of the week is pop sensation Zara Larsson!💖

🇸🇪Zara Maria Larsson was born December, 1997 in Solna, Sweden and attended the Royal Swedish Ballet School as a child and art school Kulturama as a teen. Larsson has cited early inspirations like Whitney Houston and Carola Häggkvist, and knew she wanted to become “immortal like Elvis Presley” through her music. Larsson was first noticed for her singing talent at the age of 10 when she won the 2008 season of Talang - Swedish adaptation of Britain’s Got Talent - she later released her winning cover of Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ as her debut single

🎤After signing with TEN Music Group in 2012, Larsson released her debut EP in January 2013, with lead single ‘Uncover’ reaching No.1 in Swedish & Norwegian Charts, and No.3 in Denmark; by February the song had certified platinum in Sweden. She soon signed with US label Epic Records and released her debut international album in 2017, it was a commercial success and peaked at No.26 on the Billboard 200. Larsson founded her own label Sommer House in 2022, under which she acquired her music catalog and released her 4th studio album

📱Larsson’s career has been boosted several times by viral dances & sounds on apps like TikTok, spreading her music to a global audience. Her 5th studio album received widespread critical acclaim, earning her first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording in 2025

⭐️Our artist of the week is pop sensation Justin Bieber!🎤💫

🇨🇦Born March 1st 1994 in Ontario, Canada, Bieber learned to play the drums, piano, guitar and trumpet as a child and entered a local singing competition in 2007, for which he placed second; his mother posted videos of his performances on YouTube initially just for friends and family, but they soon attracted attention from a wider audience including Scott “Scooter” Braun, a music promoter/talent agent who invited the 13 year old to record demos at a studio in Atlanta. While recording, Bieber met R&B singer Usher, who helped him sign to a recording contract in 2008

🎧Bieber released his first single in 2009, followed by a 7-track EP six months later, by this time he had a huge and growing fan base consisting mostly of young girls, the recording sold more than a million copies. His debut album came the following year, debuting at No.1 on the Billboard Album Chart and winning a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and nomination for Best New Artist. The official music video for the single ‘Baby’ became the first ever YouTube video to surpass 500 million views

📀Bieber’s music has always had success on the charts, with 8 No.1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 26 songs in the top 10, he is now the youngest artist to have seven albums reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 200, breaking the record previously held by a 26 year old Elvis Presley
