Well, this is out of chronological order, but I can’t not post this RIGHT NOW. Greatest night of Aurora viewing of my adult life.

Amazing to see the sea reflecting the Northern Lights. Amazing in every way. It’s probably still amazing out there, but we got so cold we couldn’t work our phones anymore and we had to come in and drink Grand Marnier.

Overhead at CVS vaccine waiting area: “Well I might just get the flu, and if I do then I’ll be at my goal weight.” Sigh

Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country. Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth. I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades. I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. People ask me all the time: how do I overcome #ImposterSyndrome? And honestly, I’m done answering that question. Because here’s the thing: imposter syndrome isn’t a syndrome at all — it’s a scheme.  This is something I’ve been wanting to say for a long time, and in this speech I finally found the words.  Thank you @SmithCollege and the class of 2023 for the incredible honor to be your commencement speaker. Keep pedaling. I find it fascinating that an an elite athlete, sometimes I get a free pass on some prejudices because I’m being a “good fatty.” People know I workout all the time and that I’m conscious of my diet and other perceived health markers. Basically, I’m not like OTHER fat people. However, those biases you have about fat people are what people who don’t know me automatically have about me. I’m not excluded from being a fat person. It’s an interesting dichotomy to be both a world-class athlete and also part of this “obesity epidemic.”
I get told I’m promoting obesity and that fat people like me are bad for society and the health care system and all that. Then I get messages from people saying they just got into the gym for the first time or signed up for a competition because I inspired them in someway.
Anyway, listen to the way your friends and family talk. Check out the content they like and share . It might be a valuable opportunity to see who really loves you and it might be a good opportunity to educate them on how to think about and treat other human beings.

Hey friends, this morning I learned that Yip Harburg, the amazing lyricist who wrote the words to "Over the Rainbow" and tons of other classic songs, didn't start writing lyrics professionally until after his appliance business went bust in the Great Depression. That crisis turned out to be a huge boon to him and to the millions of people who have performed and loved his songs.

What might you be freed to do if the boring but steady job you have now went away? What singular talent might you uncover?

PS: Harburg was encouraged to change professions by a guy he went to school with: Ira Gershwin. When someone you respect tells you you're good at something, it might be good to believe them. 😉
