Asbury University Paris Semester

Asbury University Paris Semester Asbury’s Paris Semester provides a 15-hr semester of liberal arts credit, focusing on history and culture, emphasizing global contributions from France.

Asbury University's Paris Semester program provides a full semester of a liberal arts education, focusing on modern and contemporary history and culture, with emphasis on global contributions stemming from France. The program’s dormitory and classroom space in the St.-Germain district places students in the heart of Paris for 12 weeks (September through November; no long-stay Visa required) under

the supervision of Asbury faculty and English-speaking resident assistants. Students also have the option of a homestay environment with a French host. Applicants do not need to come to Paris with prior French language fluency but are required to either to take French language courses for university credit while in Paris or participate in an internship placing them in context in the city. The program will be especially attractive to students of modern history; the visual arts; communications and media; international communication and business; French and Francophone culture; and French language. All students, regardless of major, benefit from competencies acquired by the challenges of living and working abroad in a major international cosmopolitan center while obtaining a semester of liberal arts credit. About our language program in Paris:

Through a special arrangement with Asbury University, students who take French language for course credit receive their instruction at École l'Étoile language school in a curricular process monitored by Asbury University’s World Languages Department. Just blocks from campus, this higher-education institution has offered French classes for foreigners since 1970, serving students from more than 125 countries. The school offers incomparable experience in teaching French language to foreign students. Instructors work alongside students to place them in the appropriate level of instruction and enrich their understanding of the French language and culture over the course of the semester.

"It is absolutely crazy that you can spend one week in the classroom learning about various paintings and artists who were influential in the development of art today and then spend the next week visiting these museums and experiencing the art right in front of your eyes."

-Stephen Kayser ‘19 shares his experiences as an art student in Paris.

"I went with Asbury to Paris in 2006. The city... and really France for that matter had not really been on my radar, but my friends talked me into joining the trip. I was a history major, and had always loved Europe, so it seemed like a great fit. But really the trip changed my life. After the trip, I came back to Paris twice before graduating from Asbury... and then I got an internship with a gallery / ministry here. The contacts that I made through Dr. Stratford, and the exposure I got in Paris have transformed my trajectory, and shaped my career. I have been based in Paris since 2008. The introduction to French culture and history that Asbury gave me, enabled me to thrive here. I am really grateful for my experience with the Asbury Paris program."

"As an artist, Paris just made sense. I experienced my favorite paintings in ways that most artists wouldn't get the chance to, I learned so much about the French culture and fell in love with a city and country that will always have a special place in my heart."

"The Paris Semester fully encapsulates the virtues of a liberal arts education. The academic standard is excellent but the true value of the semester, I believe, comes from its ability to facilitate personal growth. It was truly transformational for me as I gained a confidence I never expected and finally felt prepared and ready for life after college."
