“This question is not specific to Eastern Europe. It concerns all contexts that exist outside dominant cultural centres. Frameworks born in Western academic and political histories circulate globally and present themselves as universally applicable. Critical discourses arrive not only as tools, but often as finished languages, already equipped with references, hierarchies, and correct positions.

What is lost in this process is not solidarity, but situatedness. Local critiques, local forms of resistance struggle to emerge when legitimacy is tied to pre-existing vocabularies. Artists learn, often unconsciously, to speak in languages that travel well rather than languages that are precise. They adjust their references, smooth their contradictions, translate their experiences before they have fully understood them.”

“In the studio, failure doesn’t actually make sense.

Failure belongs to systems with correct answers: where deviation is measurable, where results are judged against fixed criteria. It belongs to places where someone else already knows what the result should be.

But art doesn’t work like that.

In art, there is no right outcome waiting for you at the end.
No solution you’re supposed to arrive at.
No correct version of the work you “missed.”

So what exactly are we afraid of failing?”

“The grant system is often presented as an answer to precarity. In reality, it rarely is. With a few exceptions, it functions more like temporary relief than structural support. Short-term injections, symbolic recognition, survival money. It keeps things going just enough for the system to continue reproducing itself, without addressing the conditions that make artists dependent on it in the first place.

The application system produces a specific kind of dependency, not because artists are weak, but because they are placed in a position where dependency is normalized, even aestheticized. Applying becomes a routine. A rhythm. A background anxiety. You learn to wait, to hope, to translate your work into the language that will be legible, acceptable, fundable. Over time, this shapes not only how you speak about your work, but how you imagine it, plan it, sometimes even make it.”

“The western classical dramaturgical model mirrors a very specific experience of time, energy, and satisfaction. […] The parallel with male or****ic logic is structurally exact. Energy accumulates toward a peak; the peak becomes the point where meaning is confirmed; everything before exists to prepare it; everything after is secondary, a closure, a descent. This is not about men as individuals, nor about biology as destiny. It is about which bodily experience was universalised as a model for how time should unfold, how energy should circulate, and when something is considered complete.”

“When a teacher’s own artistic legitimacy feels fragile, students quietly stop being learners and become potential rivals. Not consciously, not maliciously, but structurally. The classroom turns into a shared marketplace of ideas, aesthetics, and attention, where everyone is struggling to remain visible, desirable, relevant.
In this situation, students are no longer protected as learners. They become sources of material, inspiration, or even competition. A teacher who has not secured their own position, who is still fighting for recognition, may, instead of protecting students’ originality, begin to contain it, redirect it, absorb it, or compete with it.”

📚 Expanded Practices:
A Performance Art Masterclass for Visual Artists

🗓️ January 5-18, 2026

Expanded Practices is an intensive 2-week laboratory designed for visual artists who feel the limits of working solely with static forms—and are ready to explore presence, time, body, voice, and space as extensions of their practice.

Many visual artists today are increasingly drawn toward performance as a way to activate materials, inhabit concepts, and engage audiences in real time. Yet the transition can be challenging—marked by uncertainty, lack of embodied tools, and limited exposure to performative methodologies.

This masterclass directly addresses those challenges, providing a structured yet experimental learning environment where visual artists can develop a performative vocabulary, bridge installation and live action, and shift from object-centred creation to embodied authorship.

“Jealousy in art schools is rarely acknowledged as structural. It is usually framed as a personal flaw — a lack of confidence, maturity, or generosity. But in reality, jealousy is often produced by the very systems that claim to educate us.
Art schools do not simply host competition.
They train it.
From the beginning, students are placed inside competitive architectures that shape how they relate to one another. Open calls. Limited slots. Juried selections. “Best of” exhibitions. Awards.”

“Importantly, this dramaturgical grammar is not neutral. It is historically produced, overwhelmingly authored and theorised by Western men, and transmitted through institutions that continue to dominate the circulation and validation of contemporary art. While content has diversified, the underlying grammar often remains the same. Different bodies, biographies, and geographies are invited onto the stage, but frequently asked to speak the same dramaturgical language. The result is a form of monoculture: apparent diversity of themes and identities, paired with a striking uniformity of temporal logic, structure, and form.”

“My writing moves between experience and analysis, somatic knowledge and critical theory. It is always rooted in an Eastern European reality, a terrain of frictions, tensions, and shifting ground, where cultural hierarchies and geopolitical narratives continue to shape how art can be made and who is allowed to speak.”

Kolorádó x School of Disobedience Ring Project, Summer 2025

(…) the Ring does not represent. The Ring does not illustrate. It does not point or display. It does not thematize. The Ring happens. It calls you in. It stirs you. It embraces and it trips you. It confuses and it liberates. It tells stories: about itself, about you, about us.
The Ring is honest and true to itself. It does not want to be more than it is. And in this radical simplicity lies its power. It connects. Beyond narratives, beyond concepts, beyond aesthetic mannerisms. The Ring is an alternative form of a contemporary exhibition space – but not in a formal sense. Rather in its declaration. In its risk-taking. In its refusal to conform. In its not seeking to please. But in its questioning. Its invitation. Its presence.

(…) A Ring ugyanis nem reprezentál. A Ring nem illusztrál. Nem mutogat. Nem tematizál. A Ring történik. Behív. Megmozgat.

Kolorádó x School of Disobedience Ring Project, Summer 2025

Anna Ádám: (...) the Ring (...) is a curated, collective space that hosts twenty different productions. And yet, the Ring has not lost its identity. The form, the meaning, the historical and social context carried by this object – struggle, strength, rules, boundaries, confrontation, play, risk – are all still present. We do not erase meaning; we work with it, play with it, and carry it further.
