Bienvenue à Tours! The French Studies WFU in Tours students have arrived and began their stay with a walking tour of the city.

👋🏻 Un petit coucou de Dijon ! In addition to traveling throughout much of France 🇫🇷as part of the program, our fall semester students have the opportunity to discover the amazing city of Dijon, the capital of the region of Burgundy!

Here are a few highlights from the fall thus far! Our students have:
✅ climbed a medieval tower and admired the panorama of the city
✅ competed in a local 10k 🏃🏻‍♀️
✅ enjoyed a wine tasting workshop 🍷
✅ attended the mayor’s welcome event for international students at the Hôtel de Ville
✅ picnicked in the park
✅ taken photos in some of Dijon’s iconic spots

During their week in Paris last month, the group had the opportunity to get together with three alums, former French Studies majors who now live in Paris. As undergraduates, all three also participated in the program in Dijon.

Thanks to these young professionals for connecting with current students to talk about their career trajectories, and for sharing some of their favorite spots in Paris: Adam Dingman (2018), who just earned his Master’s in International Relations and Economic Diplomacy at HEIP-Paris (Hautes Études Internationales & Politiques) ; Sarah Dancy Blackburn (2020), who works at Insigniam as a consultant; and Christopher Williams (2021), who is an account executive at PlayPlay. Merci beaucoup !!

Un petit coucou de Dijon ! 🇫🇷 We thought it was about time we checked in with the fall semester students! The group has been spending the first month of the program immersed in French history and culture, including lots of travel. We thought you’d like to see a few postcards from our excursions in Provence, Burgundy, Normandy, and the Loire Valley. On a déjà bien voyagé !

We are thrilled to share the news that Dr. Ryan Schroth, Assistant Professor of French Studies, has been awarded the Zachary T. Smith Faculty Fellowship from Wake Forest College for 2024-2027. These three-year fellowships honor the best teacher-scholars in the College: faculty who are particularly dedicated and successful teachers and mentors and who demonstrate a strong record of scholarly activity. Félicitations, Dr. Schroth ! 🎉🍾

Finally, we end our major declaration week with a profile of Avalyn, a senior double major in HES and French Studies. Avalyn also participated in the fall program in Dijon and wanted to share a fun memory from her semester abroad.

« One of my favorite memories as a French Studies student was during my time abroad in Dijon, France. It was Halloween in Dijon, however, the French don’t really celebrate this holiday, so all the other 9 students from Wake came over to my host family’s house. We ended up playing games, making Nutella crêpes, and watching a Halloween movie. It was definitely a highlight and a great opportunity to bond with my host family and welcome them into this funny American tradition. » 🎃
