Hang out long enough and you start to become each other…just ask these galaxies.

In Webb’s latest image, two galaxies in the process of merging are twisting each other out of shape. Bright tendrils of star-forming regions connect their two glowing cores. These star-forming regions are particularly bright in infrared light, the wavelengths that Webb specializes in.

Galaxy brain 🤯

Preliminary Webb science shows galaxies confirmed by spectroscopy to date back to less than 400 million years after the big bang. Spectroscopy refers to breaking light into its components to create spectra, which can be thought of as “barcodes.” On a "barcode," elements and molecules have characteristic signatures we can read.

Because the universe is expanding, the light from distant galaxies is stretched — or redshifted — into longer, infrared wavelengths. We can figure out galaxies’ distances by measuring how much the signatures of elements in their spectra have shifted due to this effect.

Without spectroscopy, it can be hard to confirm how far away a galaxy is, as closer galaxies can “masquerade” as distant ones. To search for the earliest galaxies, scientists looked for a distinct feature in spectra that required Webb’s unprecedented infrared sensitivity to observe.

Finding and confirming early galaxies is a continuous process, and Webb is just getting started. Many more distant galaxies are lined up for Webb to investigate. Read more: https://go.nasa.gov/3Yed0oe

The best of both worlds 🎸

Recognize the Pillars of Creation? Two of the James Webb Space Telescope’s images — one taken in near-infrared light and the other in mid-infrared — were fused together for a new take on a familiar classic. This composite sets the star-forming region ablaze with fresh details.

Look for thousands of nearly formed stars, looking like bright orange-red spheres that lie at the edges of the dusty pillars. Stars primarily show up in near-infrared wavelengths, so this is the work of Webb’s near-infrared camera (NIRCam).

Meanwhile, Webb’s mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) is all about dust. That’s clearest in the layers of diffuse, orange dust draping the top of the image. The densest regions of dust are cast in deep indigo hues, obscuring our view of the activities taking place inside the dense pillars. Dust is a major ingredient of star formation, one the reasons why the region is overflowing with stars.

📝 Dans le cadre d'un projet de recherche porté par le CNRS et l'Université d'Aix-Marseille, l'équipe meneuse souhaiterait obtenir l'opinion des Hyérois concernant leur relation avec leur lieu de vie et de pratiques, ainsi que leur avis sur le Parc national de Port-Cros et Porquerolles (page officielle) et l'environnement.

✅ Objectif : connaître l'avis des habitants et visiteurs du Parc national de Port-Cros et ses environs pour comprendre les relations entre les communautés locales, les usagers, avec un espace protégé. Un exemplaire similaire a été diffusé dans plusieurs parcs nationaux en Europe.
