New week, new challenge! 🇫🇷

Weather is THE favorite small talk topic in France. With your neighbor, at the bakery, at the school gate... everyone talks about it.

☀️ Level 1, the easy start: just say what the weather is like today. No fancy vocabulary needed, a simple sentence will do. For example: "Il pleut." (It's raining.)

🌦️ Level 2, a step up: use an everyday expression, the kind you'd hear from your neighbor. For example: "Il fait un soleil de plomb." (It's scorching hot.) Or: "Le soleil cogne fort aujourd'hui." (The sun is really strong today.)

⛈️ Level 3, expert mode, the real French move: be expressive, almost theatrical, and complain about the weather like a true French person. For example: "On étouffe tellement il fait chaud." (We're suffocating, it's so hot.) Or: "Quel temps pourri, franchement !" (What awful weather, seriously!) Heads up: these expressions are casual/informal.

These five things will come out of your child's school bag this year, and nobody hands you a translation with them.

📓 le cahier du jour — the daily workbook. Read it, don't correct it. It shows you what your child did today.

📔 le carnet de liaison — the home–school notebook. Check it every day. Sign it. This is the one that matters most.

📗 le fichier — the consumable workbook. It belongs to your child. You keep it at the end of the year.

📘 le manuel — the textbook. Cover it, never write in it, give it back in June.

🗂️ le classeur de maternelle — the nursery folder. Don't worry if you don't see it in September — it comes home at the first holidays.

The one to watch is le carnet de liaison — it's how the teacher talks to you, and you're expected to check it and sign it every single day.

I taught in French primary schools for 10 years, so I'm the one who used to write in these. La rentrée (back-to-school) has a taste all its own. New notebooks, freshly sharpened pencils, that little knot in your stomach on the first day.

For most parents, it's a wave of nostalgia : sweet, familiar, automatic.

For you? It's also a season of translation. Re-learning rules nobody ever explained. Wondering if you're doing it "right," in a system that wasn't built with you in mind.

Back-to-school doesn't taste the same when you're an expat.

New week, new challenge! 🇫🇷

When someone asks "Ça va ?" ("How are you?")... don't just answer "Ça va" ("I'm fine").

Add a detail. A real piece of information about you. For example: "Ça va, mais je suis fatiguée" (I'm okay, but I'm tired). Or: "Je vais super bien aujourd'hui !" (I'm doing great today!)

Too easy for you? Add a little more challenge: share a small story from your weekend or your day. For example: "Ce week-end, je me suis baladée dans un parc..." (This weekend, I went for a walk in a park...)
