🌍 A translation can be correct and still fail to communicate.

In multilingual environments, words carry more than meaning. They carry culture, history, identity, and context.

For African languages, this challenge is even more complex. Limited digital resources, language variation, and cultural nuances mean that a machine-generated translation may look accurate while missing what truly matters to the people who will read it.

Drawing from his experience as a translator and interpreter at the SADC Secretariat, Kis Henry explores the gap between AI translation and human localization in our latest blog post.

He discusses:
✅ Why AI performance varies across languages with different levels of digital resources
✅ How cultural meaning can disappear behind technically correct translations
✅ Why human expertise remains essential for institutional and public communication
✅ How language professionals can use AI as a tool while preserving linguistic and cultural accuracy

🎓 Kis Henry has worked in rooms where a wrong word changes everything. A rostered English-French translator and interpreter at the SADC Secretariat, certified Sworn Translator by the High Court of South Africa, and MBA holder in International Business, he brings cross-continental expertise to language practice. He trained at the University of the Witwatersrand and is currently completing his Master 2 in Technical Communication and Localisation (TCLoc) at the University of Strasbourg.

🤖 Is AI making localization project management less important?

With tighter deadlines, smaller budgets, and growing pressure to automate, it can sometimes feel that way.

But in our latest blog post, Anna Marava argues the opposite: in the age of AI, strong localization project management matters more than ever.

Drawing on the experience of Laura Gutiérrez Herráez, a localization PM with over a decade of experience in game localization and audiovisual projects, the post explores why human judgment still plays a critical role in multilingual content workflows.

It looks at:

✅ Why source-text analysis should never be skipped
✅ How cultural nuance can directly affect quality, compliance, and market suitability
✅ Why translators need strong context, glossaries, and reference materials to succeed
✅ Where AI can save time in localization workflows, and where it still falls short
✅ Which skills future localization PMs should develop to stay relevant in a changing industry

🎓 Anna Marava is a Localization Specialist with a decade of experience in translation and localization project management. Based in Athens, Greece, she works as a Technical Content Specialist at a leading software company while pursuing the TCLoc Master’s at the University of Strasbourg.

🌍 What does the future hold for translators in the age of AI?

According to many headlines, not much.

According to experienced professionals working in the field every day, quite the opposite.

Drawing on interviews with John Worne, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and experienced IT translator and technical writer Zoe Green MCIL, she argues that translation is not disappearing, it is diversifying.

From localization and technical communication to content strategy, UX, and AI supervision, language professionals are finding new ways to build on their expertise and create sustainable careers.

🎓 With over 30 years of experience in the languages profession, Emma brings both industry insight and personal experience to this timely discussion, including reflections on how the Master’s in Technical Communication and Localization (TCLoc) helped her expand her own career beyond traditional translation roles.

Symposium on Usability and Design 2026: Where inspiration meets expertise

There has never been a better time to develop expertise in the rapidly evolving fields of technical communication and localization. Looking back at our recent Symposium, we are reminded of the incredible energy that emerges when professionals and students come together to exchange real-world insights and experiences.

For many students, the Symposium can be a true turning point. One participant shared that the event inspired them to pursue the full TCLoc Master’s degree rather than stopping at the certificate level.

Why do professionals choose TCLoc?

💡 Practical Expertise: With more than 400 hours of coursework, our curriculum covers the how, when, and why of multilingual web communication, localization, and UX design.

👩‍🏫 Taught by industry professionals: Our instructors are active professionals who combine academic expertise with hands-on industry experience.

🌍 Career flexibility: Whether you are looking to advance in your current role or transition into a new career, our flexible programme helps you join a global community of experts.

As Ray Gallon candidly put it : “It’s a lot of work. But it’s worth it.”

The expertise of technical communicators is needed now more than ever to help build the next generation of products, services, and leaders who understand how to communicate effectively in the right context and for the right audience.
