PIANO TIP: Do you take too long and fall behind the beat because of a hand position change? Try practising this change of hand position (one hand at a time) with your eyes closed. Most of the time you can manage the position change in at least one of your hands without looking. This frees up your attention to deal with the other hand if you really have to look.

Singing Tip: How do you learn your words? My favourite way is to learn my text starting with the last line of text at the end of the song and when I have that bit memorised (rhythm, notes and words), I learn the line before the final line and so on, working my way back to the beginning. I gradually put together longer sections with each line learned till I have the whole song. This helps me stay focussed and makes sure that the end is as well, or better, memorised than the beginning. I also find doing it this way gives me confidence and satisfaction.

PIANO TIP: If you consider your piano lesson as a sort of concert where you hope you’ll play well enough for the teacher to appreciate, you should know that this approach usually brings little satisfaction. It puts unnecessary psychological pressure on the student, and, with playing on a less familiar instrument, means a reduced level of focus. This reduction in focus is part of the reason why you can play beautifully on your instrument at home but less so at your lesson. If you can approach the lesson with a more realistic aim – getting practice guidance and advice for some of the challenges of your piece – you will find it more satisfying experience, and you’ll probably play better at the lesson too!

Piano Tip: I am constantly amazed at how hesitant my playing is when asked to play one hand separately. Usually I have already been playing hands together and thinking it was ‘ok’ but ‘not reliable’. If I try either the left or right hand separately, I immediately realise that my fingers are very vague about where to go and often struggling to stay clearly on the beat. The remedy is about 5 minutes of focussed separate hand practice on the unreliable section and the reward is a big improvement on the next try with hands together.

Piano Tip: Do think about whether you are playing in ‘thinking speed’ or in ‘tune speed’. Thinking speed is for sight-reading and finding the notes of a new piece of music and you probably pause frequently to find and prepare your next notes and finger positions. This is necessary, basic practice on any new piece. Tune speed is when you move to the next stage, and start to play with an even and regular tempo (metronome helps here) and the slower the better (is easier and less stressful). SLOW & REGULAR TEMPO is the goal because no regular tempo = no recognisable tune. Ideally you will start with each hand separately and move from ‘thinking speed’ to a very slow ‘tune speed’ with less than 30 mins of practice time.

Just starting to plan a new musical project for my students for this year. There are some very exciting new pieces in the pipeline and am looking forward to putting them together in a concert programme.

Thinking of taking singing lessons? If you are motivated and can fit in the practice time it is possible to progress fairly rapidly. Those of you who do sing will already know that it’s not just a question of learning the words, rhythm and the melody of a song but also of co-ordinating the breathing (for support) as well as getting to know & use a number of muscles you’ve probably never used before (for sound quality). It’s a bit like doing “six impossible things before breakfast”! All this takes time (aim for 15 mins daily in the beginning), patience and a good attitude to precision practice. This is the reality of learning any instrument but the result is well worth the effort. Enjoy the journey and good luck!

Piano practice tip: When you work on a problem section of your music do you stop at the bar line? I found myself always stopping at the bar line before going back to try again so I tried crossing the line to find the hand position for the notes at the beginning of the next bar and found this also needed practice. Including the beginning of the next bar feels like fixing 2 problems at the same time, so if it is a more efficient use of my practice time, I’m happy.

Wondering why your piano teacher reminds you to sit up straight when playing? Here’s one good reason: “A straight posture increases arousal in the brain” (from “The Stress Test”, a book by Ian Robertson)

TIP for Singers: If you brace your legs and hips to stabilise your body when doing physical/breath practice and be sure to actively engage the other muscles you need for the exercise, you will find your breathing exercises more effective.

Piano practice tip: Often we are not aware, when playing both hands together, that the left hand part is unsure but we do notice a problem or hesitation in the right hand part. Instead of concentrating on 'fixing' the right hand it can be more helpful to first play the left hand part separately and see if a fi*****ng challenge or other issue there is causing distraction which affects the right hand accuracy.
