🧡 Wild Kitchen Week: Onion Skin Dye! 🧅

Today we turned kitchen scraps into art. Our campers saved up onion skins and simmered them into a rich golden-orange dye bath, then dipped and twisted their own bandanas to see the color take hold. A lesson in patience, chemistry, and zero-waste creativity — straight from the earth (and the veggie drawer). 🌾✨

No plastic, no chemicals — just onions, water, and a little forest magic. Every camper went home with a one-of-a-kind bandana and a new favorite kitchen secret.

🌿 Day 1 of Wild Kitchen Week! 🍽️

Today’s little foragers had eyes (and noses!) on the forest floor, hunting out edible plants and herbs. Then we brought it all inside with hapa zome - pounding leaves and petals straight onto fabric to release their hidden colors. Nature’s own dye lab! 🌸🔨

This is Wander & Wonder summer camp — kids led by curiosity, hands in the dirt, learning that the forest is a pantry, a palette, and a playground all at once.

Some kids will spend their summer indoors, working on a predesigned activity, half-watching something on a screen.

Yours could be the one building dens in a real forest, getting genuinely tired, and coming home with a pocket full of things they found.

Don’t overthink your trip to the woods. They’re are plenty of ways to get your children excited for the forest. One oldie but goodie is Geocaching. It doesn’t cost anything to download the international app and start searching for treasure.

With the forest so active again, our friends have been taken with wonder about minibeasts. In particular, our 8-legged friends - the spiders.

So, we decided to dedicate a day to spiders - to tracking and observing different webs and different types of spiders to navigating our way through a giant spider web.

Our forest friends had a blast immersing themselves in the world of arachnids, and maybe even developed a new sense of care for them.

One of our favourite pieces of feedback this year ❤️

When Xavier returned to school after the holidays, his class was asked to draw their favourite holiday memories.

Among everything he could have chosen, he drew his time at Mr Garrett’s Forest.

Even more touching, he wrote:

“I learned to speak English and the names of all the children.”

Moments like these remind us that language learning is about much more than vocabulary—it’s about confidence, friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Fine motor skills can take many forms outdoors, and most always in a fun and open ended way.

Here a child used a drill to create holes in a broken branch and began threading the holes with string and a small stick attached as a needle.
